In terms of disease, both as bad as the other. But everyone who has these conditions all react differently - it depends on the treatment and advice and your own body as to how we are all affected. The BLF define COPD as :

COPD stands for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is the name used to describe a number of conditions, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, where people have difficulty breathing because of long-term damage to their lungs.

It can be bronchitis and emphysema, OR bronchitis or emphysema alone. Some have one and some have both, and yet others have one or both combined with other lung diseases. Both emphysema and chronic bronchitis are classed as COPD - whatever the combination.

I just have emphysema which is the reason I seem to be a bit better than some who have been diagnosed as not as bad as me. I have emphysema Stage 4 very sever but seem to do better than some.

As Toci says above.

There isn't one that is worse I don't think they each affect different parts of the breathing apparatus, emphysema is more to do with damage of the alveoli and bronchitis more to do with the bronchi.

The video below may help explain:

I have purely emphysema but my respiratory nurse may often refer to it as COPD, the video above states people with COPD have both, this can be the case, but generally believed in UK that we can have either chronic bronchitis or emphysema or both and still come under the COPD banner.

its just that the nurse who done my test said i have mild emphysema. my pulse oximeter was 99% but when i went to my doctors she had sent him my results has COPD moderate

but you cant have mild emphysema and moderate bronchitis can you ?? very confusing my FEV1/FVC ratio is 62% and myFEV1 is 2.67 just wonderd why she told me mild has i told my gp and he just shuged his shoulders (very helpful) mind you i was a smoker whether thats why

i have ask for another spirometry test and have been told have to wait a year so only another 6 months to go

Hi music. I don't see why you can't have mild emphysema and moderate bronchitis. They are different conditions. Have you phoned the BLF? They will advise you.

The number is 03000 030 555.

thanks lynne..will call them i always thought it was emphysema you need oxegen for has it progreses but it must be both has you get breathing problems with both conditions.

i know i can call BLF but i do like to sometimes hear peoples coments has affects us all differant

how are you doing on the treadmill after your infection what is your incline and for how long has you were doing well

im doing 1 min on 1 incline then 1 min on 2 incline and keep going but can only get to 10% on incline then work my way back to 0% doing a min a incline 1 to 10% at a min on each so 10 mins there then 10 mins back to 0 makes it a bit more intresting mind you my legs are like jelly after lol

Hi Music. I haven't been back to the gym yet since my chest infection I'm afraid. It knocked me for 6 but I am hoping to go back during the next week as I feel a lot better now.

I suspect I will have to build up gradually to where I was. I was able to go to level 6 (not sure what % incline that is) at 3.3 mph or flat at 3.5mph for 35 minutes. then 15 minutes on the bike and rowing machine.

I will be taking it very steady when I go back.

You are doing really well.
