Have recovered now, but each time I have one I wonder yet again if I am fit enough to

plan ahead.

Hi Ros, sorry you are having to deal with this, it you think these choking fits are getting worse do go back to your doctor, perhaps phone the helpline also to ask their advice and guidance on this.

Hope things will settle down and that the doc can find a medicine that works better to control this for you.

Take good care.

How frightening for you. Could you go back to the Doctor? Perhaps you could ring the Helpline - they might be able to offer advise. I hope you are able to find a solution. Take good care. TAD xxx

I agree Ros, back to the doctor I think.

I have hesitated to comment as I have always had a choking problem, since I was a child. Not like yours or as frequent, so the cause is likely very different. It is frightening though and usually happens when I'm not eating, drinking or talking. Mine is due to that dangly thing at the back of the throat being too small so sometimes saliva goes the wrong way and I choke.

I hope you get it sorted.

On reflection Lynne, it seems like saliva seems to be my downfall.

Now that is so interesting, I will also mention this to my GP.

I had my tonsils out as a child, and think it is something to do with my

larynx ?? I will find out and pass on results to others who suffer.

I had a series of 'choking' problems about ten years ago. They scared the hell out of me as i could not breath in or out due to mucus blocking my airways! Anyway to cut a long story short, luckily, i always managed to move it, otherwise i would not be here! I recall something over 50 episodes. I can say i have not had any problems since.

Without being over dramatic, i do not know if your choking has a similar basis to mine. If yes, please let me know!

I would take this seriously and get some help, advice, admitted to hospital, suction, medication to get this sorted. Talk to blf nurses, your own gp and do what is right for you to do!

Best wishes

Kevin

Is there anything that can be done to clear mucus from throat?

in reply to

Hi julie,

Keep your self well hydrated, steam helps me when i get the problem.

Also, there is medication that may work. It is a class of drugs called mucolytics. Search this site for mucodyne and you will probably gets lots of opinions. Not many gps really know about it.

Good luck

Hi Kevin, of course I will let you know the outcome.

Mine is becoming more frequent and is washing me out.

That in itself worries me because I 'have' too exercise and

not give in to it.

in reply to Is4bell4

There are times to exercise, when you are 'well' be careful.

Was the choking anything to do with mucus problems?

I am so much in the dark Kevin, I really do need to get my GP to listen, rather than passing me by with 'you have COPD' and a nebuliser.

I cannot pin it down . . maybe it is mucus? All I know is that my 'NOSE' gets blocked and when choking I cannot get oxygen . . It is a battle to get my breath.

I also had a problem with feeling I would choke when eating,or drinking at times.

My Doc.reffered me to a speech pathologist at the community health centre,& she was marvelous(they deal with eating probs.etc.as well as speech) Many good tips,on how to eat,& what to avoid etc.I only saw her 3 times, this was a couple of years ago,& rarely have a problem now.

Good luck ( I remember how scary it could be)

Hi you guys, I most often get them in bed, No food or drinks to blame.

I have an appointment with my doctor next week and just hope he does not send

me away again with only another type of nebuliser. After being on here

it has been such a help . . I have written down everything I need so

I can get him to understand. I just get the feeling it's a case of '(Its my fault for

having smoked).

Thank you all again

Had yet another one a12 hours later. I have to sleep after as

I feel so washed out. (yet alone scared).

Just wish there was not such a long wait to make an app with

my doctor.

Its now 0330hrs and another but not quite so bad. So sat up in

bed with my laptop now recovering.

xx Ros xx

Hope your doc helps you...and if not get another one...this needs dealing with. Do you think it is mucus at back of throat? What are your sinuses like? Do you have postnasal drip? All the best. X

I also have chocking episodes and have had most of my life they can occur at any time eating can be a big problem my throat seems to tighten and breathing is a big problem it usually resolves after 1-2mins which seems for ever! I can also wake up chocking .my mother also was troubled by them I so have always asummed I inherited it from her I did ask the respiratory team at my local hospital but didnot receive a satisfactory response except to not panic and try to take deep slow breaths easier said than done the attacks are very scary and leave me feeling very panicy afterwards if any one has any advice would be grateful.

Choking is very serious, I actually have a real morbid fear of the thought. Please seek medical help and let us know how you get on. Very best wishes Adrian
