I've just started a course of Azithromycine 250mg, 1 tablet 3times a week. I would be interested to know what dose other people take and how they are managing. I have bronchiectasis with frequent lung infections.

Hi Sammy
I take the same dose as you, have done for just over a year and I can honestly say its made a huge difference to me. I always fear I am tempting fate by singing its praises but i haven't had an exacerbation during this time. Some folk struggle with it and there are known side effects but for me its been a bit of a revelation. I hope you find the same.

Hi Marie,
Thank you so much for prompt reply and positive feedback. Fingers crossed that you've not tempted fate and that the magic works for me.

I also take it, but only usually during winter Oct to march and this has worked really well for me. This year I stopped in March as normal and for the next month was really poorly so my consultant put me back on them until mid June. He thinks I may have needed longer this year on them because of the longer spell of winter. I can only say about them that they do the job for me, and life improved a lot after I started to take them. Good luck and I hope they work as well for you as they do myself best wishes Julie
thank you Julie
My mum takes one every day, but even though she was taking them, she had a chest infection. Her rescue pack was doxycycline but this is ineffective. Her rescue antibiotics are now augmentin ( co amoxyclav )
I have bronchiectasis as well and have been prescribed Azith in the past, but had trouble tolerating it. However I've just been on a course of the very similar clarithromycin for a chest infection and found that by avoiding bread completely I was able to tolerate it. As my chest felt really good on Azith I'm thinking of staying bread free and trying it again.
Hi, I'm on the same but daily. No adverse effects from it. My frequent infections have reduced. Take care, Richard.
I have 500mg 3 times a week. I do get some side effects, but think they worth putting up with as the azith definitely helps.
Hi. My husband has been taking the same dose of Azithromycin as you for the last 2-3 years. These together with his rescue tablets (Cefpodoxime) have greatly reduced his infections and hospitalisations... He has obliterative bronchiolitis. Good luck!!
I have bronch and have been on Azithro for years. I get a lot of infections so don't really know if it helps! M
Pete is on the same dose as you 3 times a week and finds it helps him a great deal. He has sarcoidosis and copd and is doing well at the moment (touch wood)! Hope the Azithro helps you too. xxx
After 3 years of pneumonias, chronic chest infections & many many different ABs the only one that works for me is Azithromycin. For me it's been a godsend as I was nearly suicidal with the misery.
I'm px it when I get an infection. 3 days on followed by 7 days off for a month appears to work (though I'm not sure if the doc px this dosage correctly).
Other ABs make me violently sick but this one doesn't. Sometimes on the 3rd day I have a minor attack of diarrhoea but that's nothing compared to the others.
I heard you weren't supposed to take it if you have heart problems but I think recent research might have dispelled that.
Good luck with it. P
My maintenance antibiotic was changed from Clarythromycin to Azythromycin in Dec last year and it has made a huge difference. I haven't had a chest infection since starting Azithrimycin, despite having several colds over the winter. I also feel much better and have loads more energy so I can exercise again. I take 500mg daily but am having review next week with GP so don't know if this will be reduced. Hope it works for you.

Hiya, I have bronchiectasis which has resulted in me having part of my right lung removed at 15yrs old due to it being so damaged. Sadly the op didnt prevent the bronchiectasis from spreading to my other lung and my lung base on my right side following the surgery. I am 34yrs old now so i have been living with this condition for a long time. I have an immune deficiency which makes me prone to infections so antibiotics play a big role in my life to prevent & combat infections. I take azithro 3 times a wk and i was prescribed it as a "preventive antibiotic" as part of my treatment. I didnt have any probs with it apart from an upset tummy for the first few days then i was fine with it. I am also on a 6wk rotation of colomycin and gentamicin which i take via a nebuliser this is part of my preventive treatment and there job is to prevent me from falling ill to pseudomonus infections so frequently which always makes me very ill. My consultant said azithro works well on its own or alongside the inhaled antibiotic colomycin which you take twice a day via a nebuliser. I suffer frequent bouts of "pseudomonus" infections which i always require I.V Antibiotics for, but I have a portacath fitted in my chest which is basically a permanent I.V access site so I have been taught how to administer my own I.V drips & injections at home so it means I get home from hospital alot quicker! (Bonus!) With bronchiectasis you are aware you will get frequent infections & exacerbations so it makes sense for your dr to start you on a long term antibiotic plan. Every one is different though as it all depends how badly scarred your lungs are and what symptoms you have because of your lung disease and how they impact upon your life on a daily basis. Although there is no cure at present for bronchiectasis its vital you receive proper care & management for it from a lung specialist. There are a number of different meds out there that can help you. If you would like to know more about what other meds i personally take to manage my bronchiectasis then please let me know as I dont mind sharing if it means it could possibly help & benefit someone else in a similar situation to me feel better. ? xx
You've really been through it Lisa. I'm lots more fortunate, I'm 68 (tomorrow) and have only had to deal with bronchiectasis for last 4yrs. I have had industrial asthma since 1991 which was generally treated with high doses of Prednisolone, I rarely had infections. I'm just hoping that the Azithromycin will give me a little time between infections to build up my energy levels. Would just like to say too that this is the first time I have ever posted anything to an online website and thanks to all of you for going to the trouble to reply.

thanks for this info!
I feel my bronchiectasis is not well controlled and have been on antibiotics since December with interruptions due to muddled advice from GP and consultant; been in hospital on IV's etc.; I have just done a review for my Docs and will go armed with this on Thursday. If I have a proper care plan I can manage this-
so thanks again and I wish you all the best.
xx
My husband has the same illness as yourself, he thinks this is a wonder drug, he has not had an infection since February 2013, the first week he started taking them.
That's good, hoping I get the same result, certainly worth trying.
hi Sammy
Personally I cannot tolerate mycins in general, but especially Azithromycin, but I soooo wish I could. Many bronchiectatics I know have reported great benefits and so many less infections taking Azith prophilactically.
Lisam - I too had a lobectomy when I was 15, although on the left in 1963. They would not have done it in this day and age as my bronch was already scattered in both lungs from babyhood.
Wish you lots of luck Sammy and hope you see a great improvement.
Love cx
I have had lung infections since December and have been on 7 antibiotics. I cannot take Azithromycin as I have a heart condition. Ciprofloxacin works best but bug is back when I come off it. nebulised Colomycin is not good on it's own. I think it is trial and error until you find something that works !! we will all be experts on medicines.
good luck and hope things go well for you. x
