At last a bit over 3 weeks ago I was given a home in sheltered accommodation, a bedsit with tiny kitchen & shower room, access to communal bathroom, laundry & day room. It’s a step better than the Motel room I had although upstairs & a bit cramped, it has a small kitchen! I now have sufficient furniture for my needs from family & friends even from my ex partner a few items that I had brought into his home when I moved in there!
To make things better I also after a couple weeks daily visits to both housing benefits & universal credit depts sorted out who helps to pay rent, tax & a bit extra!
So today I will be paying rent owed up to date and arranging direct dB for continuing payments! I now have all other necessary services I need and will within the first month have an idea of how I am going to manage!
I have to remain here for a year until I am classed as a secure tenant and hopefully can apply for a home I can call forever! Sounds like a team!
I am hugely grateful to my daughter, sister & son for their support & help & my friends for their support too!

Morning Jessie, so pleased things are working out for you, if your bedsit is sheltered does that mean there are people looking out for you ? The year will pass quickly and then you can really settle down and get on with your life. Wishing you all the best. X
Am classed as having minimal care needs at moment but do pay privately for my friend, a carer, to call at least once a week to help wash my hair properly, wash & cream my back. These I have difficulty with. She also hoovers the carpeted areas! Just for 1 hour!
PIP is what I get & part of Universal Credit is called ‘limited capability for work & work related activity & housing & standard allowance, then they take of an amount equivalent to the housing because I get that from work based pension! I also had an advance they take back in bits!
Sounds complicated, I don't know why they can't just assess your needs and pay accordingly. I just get DLA which doesn't seem as complicated but I don't think they do that now.
I'm so happy for you, it must be nice even though temporary having a place to call home. And it won't be long before you have your forever home. Good luck and be happy, well done. Have a great day and take care of yourself 😊 Bernadette xx
I missed your first Post Hun, I have read it now, You have certainly had big problems with Everything in your Life. Now, the Good is starting to come through for you with the Help from Family & Friends. You are now Positive and now need to sort out Financial Help, which I'm sure you will. I approached my Local "Welfare" to help me apply for PIP, which was successful. There is always Help when you look, some don't advertise the assistance you are entitled to. I hope your Future is going to be a Very positive one now the Summer is Here. Good Luck Hun you Deserve it. Hugs. XXXXX
Hope you settle well. We moved into an independent living flat in mid April . We pay £40 a week on top of the rent for community costs but we are settling well and getting to know other residents. No more climbing stairs.and help available when needed.. bet you’ve found notifying everyone you have an account with I.e electric suppliers , the most difficult part. We moved less than a mile but had to find new GPS having moved out of the catchment area for our previous ones.
We changed supplier for phone line/broadband when we moved and wanted to keep out old phone number. Still not been released for new supplier to get for us. I allocate some time during the day for sorting out the various problems arising from the move and then switch off to have some time doing things we want to do. Hope things work out for you, know how important family and friends are.
Excellent news to read Jessie8ruff and you've certainly settled in and got everything in place. Well done as it's a huge task, especially if you're not feeling your best with the recent hot weather!
Congratulations and the next year will soon pass and then you'll have the title of a "secure tenant" 👍
Hi, Jessie, I worked in banking and finance for 36 years and never felt fulfilled. I was made redundant just at a time when my dad finally decided he would like to move from Scotland to Lancashire to a sheltered flat so that I could help my dad with my mam's care, she had Alzheimer's. Soon after the warden's job, which was live in, came up and I applied for it and despite having no experience got it, we had to give up our lovely detached house but my husband knew that it was right for me. It was the best job I ever had, I loved it, I loved my residents, I worked hard, organised outings and events for them and checked on them every day. I hope you settle down and find that you like living there or find a better flat once your year is up. Good luck and God bless x
Hi glasgowgirl, I was a carer then a qualified nurse over a 33 yr period & I loved it! 17 yr into that time I hurt my back badly & after a years therapies I was retired on I’ll health grounds from nhs, but I decided to carry on in private care. Then at end my COPD decided for me, no longer able to dash about or cope with all the bugs from residents, visitors & even staff. Constantly getting chest infections! That was 8 yrs ago! I have varied a bit but deteriorated slowly over the years then seems a bit of a plateau!
I missed my career, especially those I cared for, yet I am not yet needing care myself, just 2/3 times a yr for a week or 2 at a time! I wanted to be in a property I could call home but independent, & knowing until the very end would be everything I needed! No wardens now in this area anyway but do have call bell systems! Enough! And I have family close by!
I will make this place as homely as I can but at the end of this introductory period when I am a secure tenant then I hope to find a bungalow I can make my forever home!
