Mucus builds up in the lungs, the bodies natural reaction is to get rid of it. So you cough and wake up.

i do not cough i just wake up breathless

Breathlessness that wakes you is usually asthma, not COPD. You may also have an asthma component to your illness. This is one of the diagnostic ways in which they tell the difference.

Me too raptor, wake up very breathless sometimes, but not got asthma and don't have mucus only emphysema. I think it's when you breathing becomes too shallow and you wake up panting. Takes me ages to get my breathing back down afterwards too, by which time I'm wide awake and can't get back to sleep. LIbby

That is it exactly Libby7827. I 'startle' awake as though deprived of breath and my doctor said it is because the breathing becomes so shallow that there is insufficient oxygen, which wakes me up.

Possible sleep apnea,,give the helpline a ph they will be able to explain :)

I went to the GP and started the diagnosis procedure BECAUSE I woke up with breathlessness. There was no mucous build up and no cough. I have emphysema, not asthma.
