reducing medicine for children

my child has been in and of of a and e a lot of times for low oxygen. Last February she was admitted into hospital for 3 days as her oxygen was so low and they ended up upping her daily steroid pump to help stop this happening.

after that they advised she needed to see a specialist which after a years wait we did last month. During this meeting there was no tests etc to determine how her lungs were just medical history. The dr has suggested that since she hasn't been admitted to hospital for a year that they can start lowering her daily asthma pump as the Dr dosent think it's asthma. They want me to half her dose for 6 months and then by next summer they think she will completely be off any medication.

Before the new pump she was having attacks/low oxygen every few months and that has now stopped. I would love for her not to be on asthma pumps but I'm am so worried that we will be back in the same position again and visiting an and e.

There seems to be a lot of conflict as to whether a child can outgrow asthma or not and I just wondered if anyone has any experience of this.

It's q normal for them to reduce young child's steroid inhaler when well as least poss dose is best, because steroids are potent drugs. If u have any probs when reduced or child has an exacerbation, do see gp as they'll decide if a temporary increase is needed,or not. If Yr concerned, aluk helpline is open mon-fri 9.15am-5pm0300 222 5800

Hi, so worrying for you. It's just so horrible when things go wrong for our children, I too would suggest a call to the excellent helpline run by respiratory professionals. I'd be querying if the referral doc says its not asthma then what is it? and why were her O2 levels dropping in the first place?

As an adult I can bring my O2 level up with deep diaphragm breathing or pursed lip breathing but I've no idea how children could do it - or even if they can (my 5 yr old granddaughter was taught Bubble Breathing - similar to above - for non respiratory reasons).

Please do call the help for qualified respiritory advice and guidance....... You could also copy and paste your post to the WhatsApp number, I'm not sure how that system works though or if they call you back. There's also a help section for asthma in children on here if you delve. Good luck, I sincerely hope you get some professional support. P

Hey, you have my sympathies. It's really difficult when your child has asthma. As others have said I would be questioning what it is if it isn't asthma? The helpline are also really helpful to talk over in depth. Some questions come to mind.. How old is your child? Do they have allergies or do viruses cause asthma symptoms?

My son struggles with asthma but since upping his steroid inhaler after a particularly bad flare last year he has been so much better. I'd be very wary of lowering the dose. x
