Carbocisteine works well
With the caveat that im not medically qualified - Carbocysteine as a mucolytic & is very good at softening lung mucus making it easier to get up and out, I've been taking it for 10+ years (it certainly doesn't reduce it) know it still works because if I'm late for a dose I'll soon be coughing to get up the tiny amount of mucus trapped in my airways.
If I were you I'd be looking at lung clearance , it's not a good idea to have mucus hanging around in lungs, it's an ideal warm wet environment for bacteria to multiply - fast. My asthma comes with a propensity to infections, I use Huffing Technique if I need to, it's simple and taught me by a gp nearly 20 years ago during a chest infection - there are other methods of expelling. Some people believe diet plays a part in creating mucus as in "cut out dairy" &/or "don't eat bananas" (not me I might add although some things cause mucus in my sinuses so I avoid them).
Ask your gp or asthma nurse about lung clearance or call helpline.
Agree with peege, worth asking referral to physio if you aren't already under a multidisciplinary asthma team. They can help with clearance and provide you with instruments to help like aerobika device and teach huff technique. I also do saline nebs to help loosen things up alongside being on carboscisteine.
