Hi all. Just wondering if anyone is taking the supplement quercetin? I've started having it recently and I've definitely seen a reduction in my coughing 😊

I avoid supplements, unless

1. I can find a large scale study showing that they work in asthmatics or asthma UK recommends them.

2. My GP asthma nurse is happy with my taking them. As how can my asthma nurse manage my asthma, if I take drugs, all with interactions and side effects without telling her.

For quercetin I cannot find a decent large scale study on asthmatics, so I have not got to stage 2.

Good luck with it, but make sure you have discussed with your GP.

Hello Tucker43,

I'm happy to hear that your cough has improved recently.

While it is acknowledged that some people feel their condition improves using a complimentary or alternative therapy, due to the lack of properly conducted research results, these improvements cannot be proven to be as a direct result.

Please see our information on complimentary medicine below and if you would like to discuss the management of your condition, please give us a call on 0300 222 5800. We’re open 9.15am-5pm, Monday-Friday.

Never heard of this supplement but it’s good that you feel it’s helping. However I was once quite rightly “told off” by a gp for not informing them that I was taking a supplement. Even though they can be purchased over the counter it doesn’t mean that they can’t have serious side effects, especially if you are taking prescription medications. They can interfere with other meds and might cause serious harm.

My advice to you is that you speak with your gp and your pharmacist to check that there are no contraindications to taking it.

I’m taking 500mg of quercetin with bromelain as a supplement to medication and along with Curcumin, omega 3 and currently researching the best way to increase vitamin d safely. I discovered quercetin from a recommendation on one of my posts here, and understand it is supposed to be a natural thing found in certain fruits and vegetables that can help with allergies, and since my asthma is highly allergic , I was willing to try it and take the risk. Personally, I can’t say whether or not it has helped that much or not, since my asthma was very uncontrolled throughout pollen seasons , up to this month. But I don’t think taking it has harmed me either… like all things . It’s worth checking with your asthma nurse and that there aren’t any interactions with other medications. But if used as a complimentary supplement then hopefully it can help.
