Oh that's awful, really feel for you. I had to give up my career coz of M.E. May I suggest you phone the helpline on here, I'm sure they'll be able to point you in the right direction regarding help inc. who to contact re finances etc. Good luck. 🤞

I had to give up teaching due to M.E. but I managed to get my teachers pension on ill health grounds. (I was 49) If that is something viable financially for you then you will need a consultants report and a supportive report from Occupational Health. If not, you will be eligible for benefits- citizens advice will help with that. And, depending how you are effected you might get PIP.

So sorry to hear that you are having these problems due to your health. With your teaching experience and you mentioned working from home. Could you not look at offering private online teaching. Just a suggestion because I have never worked in this line of work. But just a suggestion. Hope you have some luck and find something to help. Brian

My wife has just done her gcse and is now doing her a level, all online with nec who give her an online tutor, which she supplements with a local in person tutor. You also have all the exam marking to do.

So switch roles to become a self employed tutor, who does school locuming when you feel good.

Ease the transition financially to this by,

1. Ensuring your present school look after you, you are disabled, they cannot just get rid of you. Are you a union member, for help. If not contact citizens advice or an employment lawyer. Make the school pay the lawyer fees Do not just rely on the school to tell you your rights.

Why cannot you carry on teaching at the school when you are better, if they make reasonable accommodation for your asthma.

Do not let them just send you a posh letter full of legalese, and accept what they say.

It is tiring to fight, so ask a friend or family member for help.

2.Understand your rights to benefits, with citizens advice.

It may be, that long term you cannot be a school teacher, but as a teacher you have a valuable skill, so create a new role for yourself as a tutor. Money wise it may be more precarious, but you might prefer the flexibility it gives you.

This is spot on! Speak to your union and this helpline and CAB. Perhaps retiring due to health reasons will be a way for you to have your pensions protected. But lots of other ideas on here are possibilities too.

There could well be lots of options open to you. I have a variety of health issues and 3 years was medically retired from local government work. I was 51yrs. It isn’t an easy option but I was retired with full pension as if I had retired at 67yrs. Speak to your union rep and there are procedures that have to followed.

If ill health retirement isn’t an option then speaking to someone like CAB will be able to advise you about your options.

I’m so sorry flamingo. It must be so stressful. Could you do supply teaching when you are well enough?

Your first port of call should be your workplace union, in order to get advice on how to get reasonable adjustments because of your disability. HR should arrange an occupational health review by a qualified practitioner. They look at the possibility of adjustments in the workplace, and to your duties, taking into account your specific health requirements. As someone else has said, early retirement on health grounds could be the option, rather than being dismissed. Again, your union should be able to walk you through the process.

Dismissing an employee because of disability absences without taking steps to make reasonable adjustments first, is discriminatory in my book.

There are other teaching opportunities, including online tutoring and distance learning, as well as being a supply teacher.

Good luck with your endeavours.

I'm really sorry to hear about the tough time you're going through. It's incredibly challenging to balance health issues and financial stability. Have you considered exploring remote work opportunities? Many companies now offer remote positions, which could be a potential solution while you focus on your health. Also, if you're open to a career change or acquiring new skills, you might want to look into vocational programs. Find Electrician Classes By clicking on the name of the State(electricianclasses.com/by-s... and find opportunities to learn a valuable trade like electrical work. This might provide you with a flexible career path and the ability to work independently.
