First Consultant Appointment

I have just got my first consultant appointment since I was about 7 or 8 so looking for an idea of what will happen/be spoken about. My GP referred me after repeated bad flare-ups last year but, since mid-October, my asthma has been pretty much fine with no bad or regular symptoms.

What can I expect at the appointment and how do I get past the feeling that I'm wasting their time when I've been months without even using my reliever?!

I certainly dont think you are wasting anybodys time. I make a list of my symptoms and any questions I have. I would think he will review your medication possibly varies tests.

Try not to get anxious.

Thank you 😊 I think a list is a good idea - will try and get some stuff down ahead of the appointment on Monday.

The fact that your asthma is not flaring now, does not mean the issue has gone away. The consultant needs to look at why you had such a period of flare ups. For example, have you got a new pollen allergy, that naturally dies away winter time, but will re emerge in the summer.

So I would hope that he does all the basic allergy blood tests, along with all the normal bloods, does the spirometry including feno and reconsiders your medicines.

Now is the perfect time to check your asthma out before the spring pollen season.

Just write down what you want to say to him. Which is basically, you had nasty flare ups and are scared they will come back.

Thank you 😊 My main trigger is really colds and I've somehow managed to avoid them between October and now - no idea how I've done that when everyone I know has been ill...
