I started taking Montelukast on Sunday night and so far no bad side effects thankfully. My cough already appears to be better but I woke up Monday night with thick mucous at the back of my throat which I struggle to swallow back down and I have been waking up a number of times a night to drink to loosen it up. I am wondering if it is a side effect of the Montelukast or just having something else going on like a cold.

Can Montelukast cause thick mucous?
sorry I honestly don’t know answer. I haven’t heard of this side affect from montelukast though. As you say it also could be a cold starting. I guess if you get any more symptoms that would suggest a cold.
Maybe give asthma nurses on here a ring to discuss because they may know. The other source for you would be to discuss with your pharmacist. They are best placed to know details in regards medications and any side affects.
My side effect was very bad diarrhoea and mys guts just gurgling. Tried the medication for 6 days but had to stop. The effects resolved 48-72 later.
I have been on Montelukast for a number of years. I have chronic asthma. I also experience thick opaque sticky mucus that collects in the back of the throat. But I have found that normally when the mucus occurs it means that there is an infection starting lower down the respiratory system. Upper or lower respiratory tract infection. This has been the case for me. Each time the mucus occurs I find I have an infection. And so the mucus continues to collect. And when the infection clears the opaque sticky mucus disappears.
The Montelukast works to dry up mucus and I have not experienced any side effects.
I'm not entirely sure. It might just be your asthma flaring but it might also be the pollen, if you have a peak flow monitor then I'd recommend checking that and if it carries on ring your GP surgery and they will give you some advice
Hello😁, I’ve been taking Montelukast for quite a few years now, I’m not sure if this is a side effect but I have the same problem of constantly clearing my throat and post nasal drip so it’s made me think! What I do know is that when I tried to come off some of my meds, as I’d been really well for over a year, within 2 months my asthma was way out of control and asked to go back on all of them but it took nearly a year to become well again. I currently take Seretide accuhaler, carbocisteine, montelukast and salamol inhalers. I daren’t try to come off them again!
I have only been put on Montelukast to help the cough I had with seasonal allergies and exercised induce coughing. I have taken 5 doses of it and I have woken with a slight sore throat and a chest cough so if it is the medication causing it then it is besides the point for me 🤣
I will have to see if the cough lingers or goes away before deciding whether to stay on it or not
I've heard of throat and chest infections as a side effect, amoung others.
However, not sure about mucus. Not experienced it myself.
Been on in it since 2018 and not had that
The medication is meant to reduce the production of that substance so might be a cold.
I have had some restless nights, nightmares and feeling tired in the mornings and more recently high blood pressure.
Hi, I was prescribed it this time last year but had no side effects nor had any benefits from taking it so stopped after a couple of months.
montelukast affected my liver causing raised alt enzyme
I'm pretty late to this post, sorry. I've been taking montelukast for 3 years now. After years of dealing with the same issue with my throat as what you described, I finally discovered the cause was my dog. I had an allergy test done and found i am allergic to the dog's hair and saliva.
