esomeprazole

after having suffered from eosinophilic asthma for several year, I have now developed acid reflux and I’m on 80 mg of esomeprazole daily. I have been on this medication for a year. My question is is it normal for such a high dose of this medication for a year. Thanks in anticipation

Hi there, I’m in omeperoxole 80mg and famotidine for acid reflux. It’s a bit of a nightmare. I hope your medication is keeping it under control for you x

I was on 80mg for about 7 years but I have ended up with a load of stomach polyps

I was on esomeprazole 40mg a day which was considered a high dose but having tried lanzoprazole and omeprazole, esomeprazole was 10 times better and the 40mg dose was probably as good as I was going to get. I found none of them fully dealt with my reflux and stomach and chest pain symptoms fully though and eventually after doing the gut-friendly exclusion diet I found out I had lactose intolerance and because I could have a bit of milk but not a lot of milk before getting symptoms I hadn't clocked this when keeping food diaries etc. I eventually cut down to 20mg dose of esomepraazole then cut it out completely and managed my reflux through diet only when trying to get pregnant. I was always mindful that all PPIs like esomeprazole, omeprazole, lanzoprazole etc inhibit the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals like iron, calcium and B12. I ended up with anemia while taking the 40mg dose and low calcium levels so had to take tablets to combat that and prevent it happening again. I would speak to your doctor to ask whether you should try cutting down your dose as it does seem very high. I understood that 20mg a day was the normal dose of esomeprazole and I was on a high dose at 40mg a day. Best of luck.

You're welcome. I think I was on it for 4 years in total.

Also I found taking probiotics calmed my reflux down. I take Symprove every morning now.

I was on esomeprazole 40 mg for as long as I can remember and about 6 months ago it was increased to 80mg.It is unlikely it will ever be decreased .

The increased dose has improved my symptoms.

I suppose the question is - do you feel you need that much or do you think a lower dose might work? Secondly, have you made any changes to you diet, portion size and mealtimes to help reduce the chance of reflux?

Thanks for your reply, yes I do follow the rules and I take 80 mg on the advice of the consultant.
