This week’s episodes of Coronation Street have featured 12-year-old character Liam fighting for his breath after suffering an asthma attack in the street. The storyline has put the spotlight on the devastating impact that air pollution from traffic fumes is having on people with asthma right across the country.

We’ve been advising the show's scriptwriters to help ensure that the story delivers an accurate and responsible portrayal of a child having an asthma attack, including:

- Symptoms to look out for in a child that may suggest asthma

- Signs of an asthma attack

- How an asthma attack looks and feels

- How people surrounding someone having an asthma attack may behave and what they should do - How asthma would be treated and diagnosed as an emergency hospital admission

- How a child and their family adapt to life and ongoing treatment following a diagnosis
