Returning to work

My asthma is currently out of control, I’ve had 12 admissions in the last 6 months, I’m nearly always in resus when I get unwell. I’ve been on steroids since October and currently can’t get lower than 20mg. - the steroids have ruined my immune system, I ended up in isolation 2 weeks ago with influenza despite having the flu jab. Im having my first Benralizumab injection on Thursday so keeping fingers crossed I have a good response to it. I’ve been off work sick for the whole of this period, but my sick pay is coming to an end so I have no choice but to go back to work as I cannot afford not to. I am a nurse who works in A&E so am going to be working with patient who have suspected COVID 19. Despite the advice to socially isolate I’m not really sure that beneficial to me considering where I am going to be on a daily basis!

Have you talked to HR? If you have severe asthma (and by being on benra you are classed as having it) we will be given stringent advice next week by the nhs (apparently) as we are at extreme risk. They don’t want you catching it cause you (and I) are unfortunately more likely to end up as a severe case. As this is government advice you shouldn’t be penalised for it.

I wish you the best and hope they listen. The NHS really is the front line in this country and I think it’s silly to add risk to people already in severe risk (and hopefully HR will agree)

Talk to your RCN rep and seek advice. And then talk to HR. You are very much at risk given the Covid-19 pandemic. Your RCN rep may be able to negotiate on the pay issue given all the unprecedented events. I have known employees to continue being paid because of exceptional circumstances - so be pro active and talk to your rep today.

All the best. 🤗

I agree! Definitely self-advocate and see if there is another more remote way you can help. This is a serious virus so take good care and keep us posted.

So I have had a conversation with my HR advisor this morning, as long as the advice to self isolate comes from an official source - ie hospital clinic, then it should not be classed as off sick and I should receive full pay. I may be expected to use the annual leave that I have from this year that I haven’t been able to take - which is fine by me. I will know more next week after my initial treatment and appointment.
