Just seen the speech from Boris Johnson. Still not closing schools. My 11 year old son has quite severe asthma, should I keep him home anyway, is he considered one of the vulnerable groups, nothing really being said about children. Thank you so much for your help.

I think it’s your call. Ring the school. Schools have special codes to put for absence due to this and there will be lots of kids who are in these vulnerable groups. If it was me I would.
Thank you so much for your response. It is so hard he wants to go in and I don’t want to increase his anxiety and if I pull him out, shouldn’t I pull his older sister out too, even though she doesn’t have asthma as she will be exposed to the same risk and bring it home??? It is so frustrating that they are not giving any guidance for children in these circumstances.
There was an expert on BBC news this morning explaining that anyone who has an annual flu vaccination, but not children, should self isolate.
I've heard on the grape vine that it's expected that schools will close for at least a month from Friday, extending the Easter holidays by 2 weeks.
At the end of the day it's your call. The fact the emphasis is not on children with pre existing conditions is based on information from countries such as China and Italy where children were not experiencing bad symptoms from the virus. Adults are very much most at risk.
Thank you so much for your response. I understand that the evidence is children don’t get it so bad but what I don’t understand that any other virus or colds greatly exacerbate asthma in most children, how is this different, particularly as this is known to target the lungs!!!! Will have to keep watching everything, which is anxiety inducing in itself to hopefully find an answer 💛
I was speaking to my GP yesterday and she brought up my son’s asthma (I’m lucky that we have a small gp practice) she told me to tell the school my son is a high risk child and his gp has advised him to self isolate. The school weren’t surprised and were very supportive of the decision. I’m not sure where they draw the line tho for which asthmatic children are most at risk.... it’s a very difficult time, hope you all stay well xxx
Thank you so much for your response, my son is 11 and was desperate to go today, so I have let him go with a heavy heart as I want to keep his anxiety levels as low as possible but will definitely revisit with him tonight. Why the government seem to have forgotten children exist, especially those at risk is beyond me!! Take care 💛
