Hi, I am new on here. 66 year old pretty much healthy lady but with severe throat clearing issue over the past 2 years. Lots of thinks ruled out ie. post nasal drip allergies etc. so doc referred me to asthma nurse. Now on inhaler twice a day preventative. But my question really is did anyone or does anyone have this throat clearing issue associated with their asthma ? Mine is constant, starts first thing in the morning and goes on ALL day !! driving me mad !! If so how long did it take for your treatment to make a difference please. I'm not expecting an instant fix and the nurse was quite re assuring that this is a symptom of asthma .

any replies would be appreciated.

Do you spend more time at home in the last two years if so it could be house dust it effects me I have to take antihistamines when staying inside the house for a couple of days .

I have a problem with throat clearing when my allergies are triggered off, which sets off my asthma. I think you could benefit from taking antihistamine, if you are not doing so already. You may have to work out what / if you are allergic to in order to try and avoid your triggers. Best wishes x

Hello gillsky.

You don't mention any other symptoms (breathlessness or wheezing). Just a severe cough. Could be cough variant asthma - you say the asthma nurse has assured you that it's a symptom of asthma.

Your new medication should be reviewed after a month to 6 weeks to ensure that it's working. Go back to the nurse if nothing improves.

It's good that post nasal drip and allergies have been ruled out. But have you been tested for acid reflux or are you on other meds for some other illness? Some medications can cause a cough. And has any underlying infection been ruled out?

I do hope you get relief!

I think mucous production is common in asthma and COPD, which is how I was originally diagnosed with both. I find the inhaler does nothing for that, and have tried montelucast, which is the standard treatment for mucous in asthma. I find it makes me tired, so use N-Acetyl cysteine (available from health stores); not sure it really works, but worth a try. For thick mucous, doctors prescribe carbocysteine, but I'm not at that point yet.

The inhalers are helping to clear the mucus from chest , if it’s clear colour that sounds ok but if it’s brown/ greenish go back to your doctor you could have a chest infection

Good luck ,

Hi. It is Stringy mucus coming up from your lungs. Do you have shortness of breath too? How are your PFT results? I have the SAME thing.

Look up the Lung Center of America.... research their site. It’s way too much to talk about here. But call them and be open to their research and treatment.
