Im 32 with adult on set asthma, quite severe and newly diagnosed with bronchiectasis. Im constantly back and forth to the gp and asthma nurse as things are not well controlled and im under consultant care at my local hospital. Im being proactive, the doctors are being proactive. I've researched lots and fairly confident im on the right track. Currently maxed out on 'normal meds' next steps maintence pred... Now my query is. My caring parents cant quite accept all im going through and disregard all of the above. They think i can be instantly fixed. Im just not seeing the right people. They like to throw money at things and dont understand its trial amd error and fitting criteria for treatment. They want to pay for me ' to go private at the best london hospital' i dont even know if the best resp doctors are in london! Anyway. If they keep badgering, can anyone recommend or see the point of paying privately when im already in the mix? Thanks for reading.

I can understand your parents concern and their desire to help perhaps in the only way they know how. I am not sure that a private consultation ensures the best outcome. It is good that you are happy with your doctors.

My only comment is to wonder if the consultant at your local hospital has expertise in bronchiectasis. This is a great forum for support in relation to asthma. There are members on the British Lung Foundation forum with bronchiectasis with far more knowledge than me.

I have emphysema and late onset asthma, am a member of both forums and have had learnt much from both sites. Best wishes.

Thank you. Im on the blf forum. I'll post on there too. I agree that private doesnt always mean best. I just dont want them to be wasting money.

The one thing that a private appointment can get you is seen considerably sooner than NHS, but seeing the right people is paramount. Key is to get seen at a major specialist centre to help you getting the best advice and care for your particular issues.

I wish you all the very best in seeking answers. X

I have bronchiectasis as well as asthma, I see two separate docs at the royal Brompton as treatment for both of these are very differently. You would do well to see an expert in bronchiectasis as most gp and consultants would dish out normal antibiotics but with bronch these don’t always work. If u can see a doc privately I would , that would get u on their books then switch to Nhs. Professor Wilson is a bronchiectasis specialist at the royal Brompton .

Go private ... like everything there is the standard and then there are the docs who are more experienced. You are 32, asthma can kill, it is worth a shot when the alternative is maintenance pred. I went private last year after about 5/6 years of my inhalers not controlling my asthma, into a&e twice in six months, ambulance to the house another night and me under the impression this was my life now as I was on Max dose to a change in inhaler, one puff a day and no issues. I have 3 kids anything that means I can be there for them is worth a shot. Try private maybe you 'll have similar experience, either way anything is worth a shot and if it works it will change everything for you.
