Hi all im 54 and about two years ago after a marriage break up( this may be a co incidence) it seems that iv developed asthma according to the Nhs. All my life iv ran 3/4 times a week iv raced bikes for years riding 250 miles a week training for years without any breath issues until 2016. Im now on fostair after telling them that my symptoms were that when inwas running i couldnt get enough air into my lungs , it felt like i couldnt get them to fully expand which was totally alien to me and i hate it, fostair has helped slightly but i still dont feel anywhere near the way i used to ...... helppppp please , any ideas , anyone experienced anything similar to me

Late Asthma Diagnosis
Look up a condition called eilo there lots of research into it at the Brompton , it gets mistaken for asthma
There’s a doctor at the Brompton who specialises in it , very common in athletes , his name is Dr Hull
Hi, until you get some info about the other advice, try using your blue inhaler before setting out and on a long cycle ride again about half way
Ditto the above. I lived in a place with dry air in winter and the word asthma never crossed my mind in 23 years. Ended up in the northern Mid West state of Iowa where winters are also very dry, given cold Canadian air moving south: no asthma. Watch out for situations that can cause a crazy coughing attack when you are using Fostair regularly - see facebook.com/aspirin2relief/
buy a peak flow meter (they are cheap online) and check your peak flow regularly. If the inhalers aren't working and you PF is ok when you have shortness of breath (SoB), chances are it isn't asthma.
I have the same problem as you but I can feel the SoB all the time but cycling and exercise make it worse.
I dont get what you are saying ...so I think you mean buy a pf meter and measure my breath when im not exercising and then when im running up hill measure it again ?
Sorry wrong message thread
Ignore my last message. I see what you mean if you only ever have SoB when exercising it will be difficult to compare.
Might still be worth trying, take a regular PF reading Morning, noon, night and see how that compares to the reading after exercise when you have SoB.
I was diagnosed with late onset Asthma in my 50s. After three years of treatment I was sent for Lung Function tests and a CT scan. Results showed I have Bronchiectasis, but no one can confirm that I also have Asthma or just Bronch on its own.
Hi Karlitto, I was 53 when I started and I had been a runner too. I am now 66 and have not been able to return to running, but I can do many other things.
I do spin class, play tennis outdoors, (doubles of course), swim and do circuit training. I had to learn to adjust to different types of cardiovascular sports.
If you are a member of a gym, have a chat with a coach to see how you can keep your lung capacity high.
I have learnt that many women who are menopausal can begin with late onset asthma, but having said that my eldest daughter and my niece have all developed it around their mid to late 30s.
There is not much around to help people like us, but if you can find a good asthma nurse, they maybe able to give you some good advice.
I wish you all the best.
Antaitai
Has anyone else experienced a change of inhaler from Fostair to something different and then in turn breathing during exercise has improved ??
