Three days in Wells, Somerset

I recently went to the lovely city of Wells in Somerset, where I have a lot of friends and good memories. But I had a bad time there: it was very rainy the whole time, and I found I had really bad breathing problems, stopping every half a street to get my breath. I remembered that Wells was where I went to A and E for the first time, and now am wondering if its situation is bad news for asthmatics. It is situated in a dip in the hills, and is apparently always very damp. Somebody said to me that it is the worst place to have sinus problems. I'll be sorry if I have to worry about going there: does anyone else have problems local to Somerset?

Apart from travelling 270 miles to Yeovil on a Tuesday night to see Huddersfield lose 2-1, I've never had any particular problem with Somerset. However, I think it's true that we can be 'allergic' to places. As a child, I always had trouble whenever we went to Scarborough. 40 years later, my son moved there & guess what - every time I went, I'd feel wheezy. I think you're right that certain locality issues in an environment might well be a trigger. You could maybe try anti-histamines when you are there, or perhaps just increase your prevention dose a few days before you go?

Wells was one of the first places we looked at when contemplating a life changing move, although neither of us suffer when there it was other factors that stopped us moving there i.e. the nearest major hospital. When we lived in Lincolnshire my asthma was really bad and we were moving from Leicestershire as hubby had been really poorly particularly in the winter then we had a letter from the Council saying they had conducted an air quality exercise and our area was below safety standards. So the answer is yes, certain areas affect different people. We now live in South Somerset and touch wood it seems fine

The West Country does have a warmer and wetter climate than other parts of the UK and that won't always be beneficial for asthmatics. I lived in Bristol for a couple of years and my asthma was never fully controlled when I was there. Bath is another place that has a bad reputation for asthmatics being a city (albeit a beautiful one) surrounded by steep hills.
