How would you know it is your asthma? These are things I struggle with as well, as I used to just 'live with it'. Now if I do feel a tight chest, and it is of more than a few moment' duration, I treat it as asthma. If I notice my breathing, and it feels the slightest bit uncomfortable or laboured then I assume it is my asthma. I didn't used to even notice, or pay attention, and in the end i got quite ill.

Asthma and its symptoms differ greatly from person to person, it is only with experience that you start to recognise the signs. A tight chest is fairly common, increased cough, more shortness of breath, lower or erratic peakflow and wheezing are the general indicators. However these aren't all of the symptoms and these symptoms don't just apply to asthma. A tight chest can be a worrying one as it could be a number of things but after suffering from it regularly you will know when it is asthma. As with any chest pain or tightness it is probably best to get it checked out. Discuss things with your asthma nurse as to what you should do when you get hit by a tight chest, increased inhalers or steroids are the norm. Different things work for different people, I often use a heat pack or hot water bottle as well as increasing certain meds, I'm not sure that it helps much from a medical perspective but it can temporarily make you feel more comfortable.

If your tight chest is relieved with the blue inhaler, then it probably is asthma; if not, as others have said, best get it checked out. I had intermittent chest pain for years - turned out to be anxiety, so nothing clinically serious. Try not to worry too much, but definitely get some advice if it doesn't go away.

Hi Shaonnon,

I am asthmatic from last 20+ years, had gone thru very bad time. However 15 years back every thing came to normal, with support few reputed doctors in Bangalore/India. After that for 10 years I used to go to doctor once in 3 years just for lung function test. Was on inhalers(Salmetral + Beclamethasone) and occasionally montelukast 10 mg , 1 tab per day

But 5 years back i suddenly started getting chest tightness/breathlessness, and doctor said that my lung function was100% normal, and gave clonazepam 0.5 mg(anxiety medicine). That helped me a lot and was in control till recently. But i tried tapering clonazepam 0.5 mg, and breathlessness started to bother. Hence restarted taking full medicine.

So Check with your doctor and if anxiety is the reason.

vijay
