Sleep Problems

Hi! I've been having really bad sleeping problems and usually get tired but can't fall asleep. It usually takes me until 3 am. I'm really worried that it's a sign that I'm going to have an asthma attack.

Hi, just wondering if it's asthma symptoms that's keeping u awake or just that u can't sleep? For me, not everyone is the same, I can get to sleep but if my asthma is bad it wakes me sometimes several times during the night, the most common time for me for me to be awake and unable to get back to sleep is between 3 and 4 I found out recently that when the steroid that ur body makes naturally is at its lowest, if it is ur asthma symptoms that's keeping u up its generally because ur asthma isn't as well controlled as it should be and something which u should speak to ur gp about, hope this is helpful xx

Hi Neko -Kun if you check your peak flow readings they should let you know how your asthma is doing.. Sleeplessness seems to be a common problem with asthma sufferers I always listen to the radio during the night, I seenpm to cat nap as I fall asleep listening to one thing and wake up to something different añd wonder how the first programme finished, ah the joys of asthma. You can always phone your doc or the helpline to out your mind at rest. Good luck ♥

As Starveycat has said, your peak flow ready should give you an idea of your asthma status. Out of interest, what are you doing before you go to bed?

One other thing to bear in mind is that you may have unwittingly sparked a 'vicious circle' of events. You have a problem getting to sleep for a couple of nights, start to stress about it, which isn't going to help you to get to sleep, which means you get more stressed, which means you will find it harder to get to sleep, etc ...

I've started taking my symbicort closer to bedtime and my montelukast later too. Also if I have had a lower than usual bedtime peak flow I take my salbutamol as I get into bed. This does all make me a bit jumpy and it is harder to fall asleep sometimes but I seem to be having less nighttime asthma symptoms (still some most nights tho)

Keeping an eye on my peak flow is helping me at least see patterns with my asthma and I am recording my salbutamol puffs as well.

Hope your sleep gets better soon 😊

Hi all, I've been having problems sleeping aswell by the sounds of it you have too much on your mind and like one of the other post's put your stressing yourself out by the sounds of it your so worried that your going to have an asthma attack that your forcing yourself to stay awake and your now in the same circle I'm in no matter what you just can't sleep with me how mine started was I just had an operation and it was the pain keeping me awake I knew sleep was important but then after a month the pain eased yet I couldn't sleep on Xmas eve I spoke to my gp about a way to help me as I suffer with epilepsy and can't have sleeping tablets he gave me something for stress with a side effect of sedation to help me sleep as if I didn't sleep I would have fits the tablets are helping but I still get nights I'm up all night and this is my 3Rd month so what I'm saying to you is try to clear your mind of all worries and if that doesn't work see your doctor as you could end up like me months with no sleep.

I have always had sleep problems. as a child my mother was very strict about bedtimes. I was usually in bed by 8pm read for a while then had to turn the light out. as a result I used to wake about 1am and had a real problem getting back to sleep.my husband says I worry about worrying!!! I go to bed feeling really tired, lights off and I'm wide awake. I have tried all the remedies hot chocolate herbal pills etc. nothing works. my dr. put me on amitryptiline for anxiety and they help a bit. now I just get up and do a jigsaw. as we are retired I can sleep on in the morning. I really envy people who just turn the light off and sleep. like my OH!!!

Are you taking oral steroids? I made the mistake of taking them with dinner and it took 3 nights for me to realise they were keeping me up at night!

yes I found that as well. I occasionally am given a course of prednisalone and I make sure I take them in the morning
