In 50s/early 60s, tratement for asthma was very basic, no inhalers, mainly barbiturate based, ephedrine, Franol and Amesec (both conning ephedrine )
When 9, it was decided to send me to a special boarding school, known as an Open Air School. These were located in very clean air parts of the country.
Whilst my asthma improved enough, to allow me to play sports, there were unfortunate tragedies which rammed home the seriousness of asthma. Two deaths occurred whilst I was there, one from a serious infection, who died in hospital, the other boy, was a brittle type asthmatic, went from the dormatory to the loo, one night. Didn't return, so went down to loo, no reply, someone look over top, and he was on the floor. We got him out, and, as all tough CPR attempted it whist nurse aroused. Too late, Paul was dead. It was cardiac arrest.
Still remember the names of those two 50 od years on.
