Breathing aids

Hi, this is my first post. My wife ( 56) has always suffered from Asthma, but recently her breathing has deteriorated and was recently admitted for a short while to a hospital. She was put on additional medication (theophilan) in addition to her current medication which is a mixture of inhalers and nebules which she uses on a home nebuliser.

She saw her G.P who said that her asthma was as a result of the time of year and would ease with time (about 2 months)

I would like to assist my wife to recover faster ( and more permanently)and wondered if anyone had experience of some kind of device that would assist recovery?

My brother used some kind of mechanical device which he said helped (he no longer has it) and can't remember the name.

Any advice and guidance would be appreciated.

Derek

Hi Derek. Sorry to hear about your wife. The GP probably means all the winter colds/bugs going around by saying her asthma is a result of this time of year. I wonder if the breathing aid you refer to is a device called 'PowerBreathe'? My teenage son used it for a while but wasnt sure if it helped. His consultant at the time said it 'won't do any good, won't do any harm'! There's been quite a lot of debate about its efficacy on this forum, over the years, type PowerBreathe into the 'Search Keyword' box at the top of this page and it will bring up previous posts.

I vaguely remember another device discussed on the forum a long time ago, but can't remember what it was called! I'll have a think and let you know if I find out. Although as with PowerBreathe not everyone thought it was worthwhile! Because asthma is so variable, what helps one person may not help another.

Aside from that, we have tried different things over the years. My son had Homeopathy but that didnt help at all. He's taken a range of vitamins (Selenium, zinc, Vit D) and fish oils. He now takes a dairly multi vit. Plenty of rest and avoiding triggers such as smoke and allergens also helps. Exercise is important but as it can also be a trigger, my son paces himself carefully and uses his inhaler beforehand.

Sorry if this is obvious stuff!

Hope things improve for your wife.

Hello again Derek. Just remembered what the other device was - Flutter aka Flutter Pipe. It's supposed to loosen phlegm. May not be relevant to your wife Derek but just thought I'd mention it.
