My Gp puts me on 10 Days Course of Stetoids( to control severe Asthma) side effects are sooo Bad but they make me better, so put up with them but whithin 3 days of finishing the course. I'm back to square one with severe wheezing, coughing, etc
Since Jan I have been on 4 lots of 10 Days and now tomorrow I need to go back to gp
hi if you are that bad might be worth a trip to A & E to get you sorted sounds like the steroids are a stop-gap and not really doing anything longterm
It sounds like your meds are not enough for you. Have you been referred to an asthma clinic to have your meds reviewed? If you've needed that many courses of steroids then you should have been.
Also are you tapering the dose? I know they say you don't need to when it is only a ten day course but I've tapered mine in the past and it seems to have helped my body to adjust.
I hope your GP appt went ok.
This sounds very similar to where I was at the end of last year. In the end I needed a good three weeks without a break to allow the steroids time to work without slipping back. The OOH doctor explained it as 2 steps forward and 1 (or even 2) back which kind of made sense but is not easy to write down. I also always taper with 10 days (very quickly though). Like others have said, it may also be an idea to ask for a review of regular meds to see if there is anything you can add in for when you finish the steroids.
Hello every one, it is really great to join this forum. I like to know more about Asthma, as i am diagnosed with Asthma few months back. Just want to know and learn how to leave with Asthma.
Please help me to know more about Asthma.
Thanks
Laura K.
Alas I know the feeling i've been on steroids for almost a month now after what was meant to be a short course.
Started off with an intended 7 day course of 30mg with plan to then taper, but asthma got worse so went up to 40mg after 7 days (on advice of gp) then ended up in hospital for a few days so stayed at 40 for 5 days and then started taper because consultant thought i could handle it. Got down to 10mg and ended up at the gp surgery nebbing and so gp put me back up to 30mg, was doing well at 30 and thought i'd be able to start a slow taper beginning of this week and then ended up in hospital again this sunday so back up to 40mg. starting taper again on friday is plan but a slower one.
I phoned the asthma nurses here about how unstable my asthma has been lately and she suggested that the inflammation in my lungs may not have ever settled down since the attack i had at the end of the november. and perhaps I needed to saty on them which is why I talked to my gp about stepping back up.
I'd really recommend phoning the helpline as the nurse i spoke to was lovely and let me talk through everything. Sounds to me like a refferal to an asthma clinic or a change of meds for you could be helpful (I'm currently under resp nurses at hospital) but obviously i'm not a professional.
Good luck talking to your gp and hopefully your lungs start settling down soon,
Jen xx
p.s. sympathise with the side effects problem i have the joy of steroids helping my asthma but aggravating my mental health issues so it can be a bit of a catch 22.
