Rinsing out your mouth....

O.K. I feel sort of embarrassed asking this...but I seem to be taking my steroid inhaler a lot in my car on the way to work as I'm running out the door. What do you guys do when you're out and about, when you need to rinse out your mouth to avoid getting thrush?

LOL. Because you know I would only ask another asthmatic this...

Thanks,

Bee

i do this when i take my inhalers really late and im too lazy to get out of bed. i just drink a lot (you could have a bottle of water in the car) but make sure you drink plenty so it doesnt just stick in the back of your throat. spoke to a pharmacist who said it shouldnt affect your throat if you do this! i'd keep a drink in the car if you tend to be a last minute rusher :-)

The problem with drinking the water is that you then swallow whatever steroid is left in your mouth from the ICS, and that becomes like an extra dose of systemic steriod.

Another possibility: keep a water bottle to drink and paper cup in the coffee holder to spit in. Or if you typically grab a coffee mug when you go out the door, spit into the coffee mug when you are done drinking the coffee?

Thanks...that's helpful. I like the idea of using my coffee mug. Or a paper cup. Then it's easy to throw away when I get somewhere.

i have found today that a load of the skin in my mouth is coming off (god that sounds gross!) its mainly near my gums, i'm not bleeding so i assume its just the top layers but its really really sore. i have had a really dry mouth for the last few days and been really thirsty all the time. is this probably my inhalers and me not doing a good enough rinsing job, or does it sound like something else? anyone had similar experiences? (didnt want to start a new tread as i suspect the answer will just be 'wash mouth out better' lol)

Hi Soph :)

I had a LOT of problems with oral thrush for a few months and no matter what i did ( and yes i did do ALL the things you're supposed to do) i couldn't get rid of it until my chemist suggested that i look up slightly when i am taking my inhalers (i have some i can't use a spacer with)at the join between the wall and the ceiling as this will stop the powder hitting my tounge.

Guess what? Its only gone and worked!!! Soooooo simple and yet so effective! Hooray :)

Hope it works for you, a sore mouth is no fun at all.

I've got to admit that I quite often forget to rinse my mouth out, I guess its only a matter of time before I live to regret it!

Please rinse out your mouth properly. I've got enamel damage on my teeth and bits flake and shear off like slate. I did rinse but not thoroughly.

Apparat from the discomfort, ugly results and pain it costs a fortune to keep getting repairs!

Arggh, ok you've convinced me!! I promise I will!! xxx
