Piko-1 readings question!

For those hwo use the little Piko-1 pf meter does anyone know what the FEV1 reading means?

And how to work out whether it is a good reading or bad?

Thanks!

FEV1

This is the reading which you get fromthose lovely! Spirometry tests.

It is the Forced Expiratory Rate in the first second of exhalation.

It basically shows the litreage and strength of your lungs. For asthmatics, this should increase as your PF goes up, hence the fact that our airways disease is reversible.

For COPD sufferers and people with for instance Emphesyma, their FEV1 remains below average as their airways disease is permanent.

Consultants use both your PF and your FEV1 to determine the type of lung disease you have.

It is also a useful way of gauging how poorly you are. Your FEV1 wil be very low if your lungs are unduly blocked and your chest tight.

Hope this helps Wheezer.

And just one other thought here....Are you using your old Wright and your new Piko metres side by side atm? When I switched to the Piko it took me a little while to get a hang of the technique-ie the longer blow, and also the smaller mouthpiece sometimes gave me a falsely high reading until I had got the hang of it. This also got questioned in hospital and they often checked my PF with both metres to satisfy their curiosity.

Good Luck with it! ~When I was really desperately bad back in November I found it a great help to have it in my bag to know how poorly I was....now the thing is gathering dust some where and I can't even remember what a PF reading is as the hospital told me to go by how I feel these days and I only generally dig it out if curiosity gets the better of me!!!!

Thanks Sus

Ive tried readings on both and PF is same on each.

The fev1 value seems low to me but then again I got no idea what normal is lol!

Hmmmm Sus lol

I stopped doing double readings now just relying on the Piko-1 as they were doing nearly the same readings anyway!

FEV1 readings alter AFTER a major neb fest but pf seems to be same as always unstable and bad :(

But generall fev are low I been told :(
