Exercise and asthma

Hi all, hope everyone is feeling ok and had a great Christmas. Just a quick question, my fiancé and I are thinking about joining our local gym...a kind of new year thing (!) and I'm thinking about joining a couple of classes, one of which is aerobics...does anyone have any experience of doing this? How intense are classes?

Hi Jenna

I used to do aerobics in my 20s and was OK - most gyms put on different levels of classes, you know, beginner, intermediate, advanced/intense etc but that was before my asthma diagnosis and I was fit. Some years later did Step Aerobics when it was fashionable, and didn't cope at all well. In fact, the instructor would regularly get concerned about how red in the face I got and how bad my breathing was, plus, my heart rate was higher before starting than most of the girls after they had done the class! Nowadays in my mid 40's :-( I wouldn't even attempt anything that energetic but my trigger is exercise - I find it hard to swim, walk up any kind of an incline and running is out of the question sadly. You need to talk to the people at the gym and maybe do a taster session before you sign up for it otherwise you might be wasting your money. Oh, and keep your blue inhaler with you while doing it - take it before the class starts.

Good luck with your fitness regime!
