I had some lung function tests done last friday and the results were normal, does this mean I don't have asthma?
I saw a different consultant today and she suggested it might be due to being on a high dose of inhaled steroids but even though I explained that I stopped my inhalers for 12 hours before the tests
My spirometry tests have usually been ok as well, doesnt lessen my coughing episodes though and I suppose its good toknow that your lungs are ""fundamentally"" ok.
Spirometery done when asymptomatic and well can be totally normal in asthmatics and do not exclude the diagnosis. I guess your condultant meant that because you are a higher dose of steroids your asthma is controlled at the moment. They ask you to stop taking both short acting such as salbutamal and long acting (serevent adn femoterol) bronchodialators as these will effectthe results. Steroid inhalers take much longer to wear off so will not affect the result. if the test was done on a day your symptoms were bad then the measurements obtained would be expected to be lower due to airway inflammation. You taking high dose steroids has done its job and reduced the inflammation in your lungs hence the normal result.
My spirometery used to be normal when I was asymptomatic (back in the good old days) and showed obstruction when unwell. The obstruction reversed somewhat following treatment with a bronchodialator; it showed reversibility which is the difference between asthmaand copd. Not had one for a longtime but haven't had a normal one for a while
thanks for the replys, I was getting a bit confused cause I kept reading on the internet how a normal spirometery probably means someone doesn't have asthma etc but it's nice to know I'm not the only one who has normal results when they are asymptomatic.
