I am currently overweight mainly from being off work for months and steriods and have decided to lose some weight by taking up a new sport. I went swimming a few weeks ago and the smells made my asthma worse. I cant go outside when its as cold as it is. What sport would you guys recommend that isnt too intense?

likewise am overweight but have lost 11lb in last 3 weeks with weight watchers just got info and do it by self have you thought about gentle exerise in a gym at least its warm and even if you only walk on treadmill or do gentle cycle. most gp's do a referral for a few weeks for certain gyms under government sceme so try asking at gps.

swimming is frequently suggested as the best activity, but the chlorine is a major problem in pools and it's made worse by the pools gradually getting hotter to suit the leisure crowd. A good temperature should be 27degrees, but I'm lucky to have a pool although being around 29 has virtually no chlorine, so if possible do try other pools. The figure to ask if you want to check is the 'combined chlorine level' Ideally it should be below 0.3 parts per million, but most pools work somewhere between 0.5 and 1 which is OK, anything above 1ppm forget it if the water or air temperature is hot.
Have a word with your GP, lots of places now do the GP fitness referral for council run gyms, and some private ones, which will give you free access for upto 6 months depending on area again, but best option would be to wrap up, scarf over your mouth and just do a few gentle walks, the fresh air and being out doors will release endorphins giving you a natural high, grab some friends as well if you can, makes all the difference, and hey treat yourself to a coffee with them and then walk back.
When I was younger a group of us would ride mountain bikes (age range 15-67ish) for about 20 miles max one night a week, only to a pub for a quick drink and then home again, but the older riders enjoyed it as did us youngsters, until we crashed into each other now and then, Oh and not drunk, flies in our eyes lol!
I have been on the GP scheme however I didnt get on with the gym as I need structure and it still seemed to cost me allot! I can use the gym free at work however I dont want to half the time when I a there as I get tired easily!
I was looking the other night and found a fencing course I am going to give a go!
I want to do weight watchers etc but its the cost and my low self confidence means I dont want to tell other people my weight or stand on the scales infrount of people!
If u join a gym just take care. I went back to gym told trainer I wanted gentle excercise to build up confidence and tolerance. He was very motivated I got caught up pushed myself a bit too much. But left thinking how well I did til 3 hours and a blue light later a bad asthma attack. Not went back that was October took a years membership. So take care at gym induction

If you want to do Weightwatchers don't worry you dont get weighed infront of anyone its all done in private and your weight is never disclosed to other members. Another member might ask how you have done on terms of loss or gain but it is only to encourage you and you need not reply if you feel uncomfortable, also GP's are now able to refer you to Weightwatchers free of charge for a 12 week period if your BMI is over 30 so well worth asking. I have been doing Weightwatchers on an NHS referral for 9 months and have lost 75lbs (5 stones and 5 lbs) and feel the weight loss is well on the way to transforming my life. Exercise is also helpfull but a walk is better than nothing and is a start.
how about local groups such as yoga or pilates, usually in village halls or similar, they tend to be pay as you go so if you don't like it you don't have to go back, advantage with both these is that it's as hard as you want it to be, although do watch yoga, some style can be very energetic.
I did think of pilates but my lesiure center its 5.50 a session and at 9.30pm!
price is about right, but a bit late isn't it, I do a class 8-9pm but don't usually leave till 9.30 time we've had a chat so you wouldn't leave till 10.30 at the earliest, surely more people would attend if it was earlier, might be worth having a word with the staff and see if there is a possibility it could be changed or an additional class, sometimes this gets results as two classes then get run.

well done on 5st weight loss, you must be really pleased.
i exercise daily at home, just squats , sit ups stretches etc,
but my passion is kayaking, it is a bit cold at the mo, but paddle regularly.
