Are we going to ban dogs, cats, trees, grass, flower shops, scented candles. Folks please be reasonable if someone has a dog I ask them to move away or I move away if someone is wearing tescos value aftershave assuming I don't go splatt I move away. These unreasonable petitions only go towards peoples idea that severe asthmatics are just over-reacting.
Bex
Bex,
You have jumped the gun, it's not so much perfume you wear, but yes thats part of it, but scents used in cleaners and household goods, and not just for asthmatics
There are huge number of conditions linked to such chemical perfumes, this link will give more details. tinyurl.com/myudl3
I know from research I've seen on products used in the construction of houses are starting to cause concern, the chemicals used in chipboard, most commonly used in all new houses for floors, or MDF, another man made board, used to make moulded doors, and some kitchen cupboards, along with plastic windows release chemicals that have been shown and proven to cause cancers, and is released into the home by the use of central heating.
I read the peition its is wide ranging and amounts to scare mongering. If you want to sucessfully petition Parliament I suggest you use tight and specific wording and do it the old fashioned way
But hey don't take my word for it ask someone who worked in parliament, ooops that would be me then would'nt it
In defence of perfume.......
Hi,
I think some people here are already aware of my love of perfume! I wear it all the time, both at work and out in the evenings. During the day it’s a fairly light one which can only be smelt in close proximity for example leaning over me. At night I tend to wear a heavier perfume which could be smelt standing next to me. I do not bathe in the stuff!
Perfume is more than simply something you put on your skin. It’s part of the image you present & who you are. My mother wore YSL River Gauche through out my childhood and used to leave one of her scarves hanging over our doors when we were left with a babysitter. Please note not advisable if you have asthmatic children! My Nan has worn Elizabeth Arden’s Red door ever since I can remember and the scent of it now triggers some of my earliest childhood memories.
There are more relevant campaigns out there with regards to asthma for example making sure all asthmatic individuals have a personalised asthma action plan or raising awareness amongst the general public of how to deal with an asthma attack etc. I would be very concerned that something like this might lead to alienation of members of the general public who previously might have supported AUK. It would also be almost impossible to implement!
Just my tuppence worth,
Hope this finds everybody well,
SX
Whoops, Woody-sum, think you should have chosen a better title for your topic! Whilst I cannot stand anyone who feels the need to bath in the stuff, banning perfume and perfumed products, just isn't right! Apart from infringing on people's right to use perfume and perfumed products, the banning of such products would have the ""ripple effect,"" for example people's jobs would be put at serious effect. I think it would be far better to educate people on the use of perfumes etc, a little for those who are not affected by it, can be very pleasant, but the over indulgent use can be a right turn off.
What next ban people eating peanuts in public in case the person next to you is allergic. Personally feel that it is better to achieve a balance than alienate people, and I fear such petitions will do that.
I don't do much travel on the trains but the other day my senses were bombarded on a short trip to Liverpool Street. A seat or two to the right in front of me was a loud gentleman on his mobile for the whole journey discussing his shares, property deals and his short holiday break. Behind me another gent was saying how he needed to buy some new braces as his existing ones keep pinging, and since the 'High and Mighty' shop had closed he was going to have a look in Ilford, and if no success there on into London. He went on that if can't find a pair of braces he will settle for a belt. As I started thinking 'Why don't you just belt up?!' I turned round and saw a huge chap who wasn't on his mobile but talking to me! I suggested that he might want to try Harrods, and ,as I was filling in a banking slip and needed to know the date I asked him if he knew it. He then asked others in the carriage and pretty soon I had the exact date, 20th June. I thanked him for his help. The first gentleman was on his way to Ascot. The were a number of pretty ladies with hats in the carriage too, no doubt on their way there aswell, who broke into giggles once the big chap had alighted at Ilford.
There was no let up from the fun on the way home as someone had thrown themselves under a train at Romford so everyone had to find their best way home by bus. Many of us caught the underground train to Newbury Park and then a bus from there to Romford and beyond. Now I was packed in with people coming home from Ascot, and as luck would have it my seat was in front of two beautiful middle-aged but young looking ladies discussing the day and for some reason their perfumes. I know you were wondering where I was heading with this. Well I have got to say that their perfume was like breathing fine raw smoke, within the confines of the packed bus.
I will gladly sign any petition against the use of perfumes in public. I will also sign any petition against the use of mobiles in public. I will also sign any petition against strangers talking to me in public.
Do I think it will make the faintest micro factor of a difference?
No, that is why I have wasted your time with my story!
Basically, I fear that the petition itself will prove to be a waste of time!
Sadly...

Bex - im in total agreement with u and i also am triggered by the stuff.
While we realistically cant get the stuff banned(and y should we) 2hat i do object to is
a- shops selling the stuff that squirt it at you as u pass or regulayly squirt into the air
b- staff on a resp ward wearing any perfume
c - patients on a resp ward being allowed to use perfume/body spray or spraying deoderant in proxomoty to me or any other person strggling with breathing problems.
but i do feel this petition is a total waste of time so im afraid i wont sign it
Most washing powders and cleaning products make me sneeze or wheeze.
Some perfume likewise. Perhaps we should go back to the days when people couldn#t afford prefumes and bathed once a year and their houses likewise?
Oh wait a moment, didn't they live in cottages with straw roofs. Straw for me? A hayfever sufferer? OK its back to the stone age and caves.
It is very dangerous ground I think to bring up a petition to try and ban perfumes.
If we were to go that far then what else would people want banned. I am triggered by perfume and yes it would make my life alot easier if perfume was baned but its not other peopels fault that perfume triggers my asthma so they shouldnt be punished by not being allowed to wear it. I do think in hospitals it needes to be addressed. Respiratories wards are very good but when on an assessment ward i often come accross peopel using spray deoderants and nail varnish etc.
If asthmatics could have everything banned in public that triggered then off then I dont think there would eb much left.
Since the smoking ban came in it has been great other than the mass of people standing at pub doors etc but perfume does not have the same damaging effect as smoke. Smoke damages people even if they dont have asthma or anything whereas perfume doesnt.
I think I ahve gone slightly off the point. But although perfume triggers my asthma I think it is silly to try and ban its use in public.
Olive
That was the point I was trying to make!!
Twizzle
I like Olive's point - if we start trying to get perfumes banned because they are a trigger, where do we stop? Who'd be willing to sign a petition to get pets banned? Lawn mowing? The internal combustion engine?
Not a chance.
