Does anyone rally know what this is? It is the new name for what I have.

Found only this, I'm afraid:

Asthma, asthmatic (bronchial) (catarrh) (spasmodic) J45.9

Perhaps a doctor-type can illuminate?

Off the top of my head - is it a READ code?

Will check

It's the ICD-10 code for 'asthma, unspecified'.

ICD is the International Classification of Diseases, a register by the World Health Organisation that gives a numerical code to, supposedly, every disease that a human being can fall prey to. Very interesting reading (not).

You can find out more about ICD-10 at who.int/classifications/icd...

I wouldn't worry about it, though, Rusco - it's just a label for the purposes of statisticians and epidemiologists. It doesn't change anything about your disease or its treatment!

Hope this helps

Em H

It's an ICD-10 code (International Classification of Disease), which has a code for just about everything (including such well-known medical conditions as ""sibling rivalry disorder"", yes, really!).

J 45 appears to cover most sorts of asthma except acute severe, and chronic obstructive, which i suppose leaves the sort of ""intermittent"" symptoms that most mild to mod asthmatics have. It all looks rather confusing, but I hope the info is useful. There's a website that comes up if you google ICD-10 that you can have a look at. Giving something an ICD-10 code is mostly done so that hospitals or GP practices can keep track of activity figures etc, which ICD-10 code your asthma has is probably not very important clinically (in my opinion, others may of disagree of course).

Hope this is helpful

You can tell I'm a GP, can't you...? well at least I was close!

Nah, Cathy, I don't think many specialties really use ICD-10 these days... I only recognised what it was cos I used to do psych and ICD-10/DSM-IV was quite the thing... if you're not sure what you're dealing with, give it a complicated name/number and everyone will feel a whole lot better!

What's a READ code, by the way?

Em

READ codes are the system that GP notes are coded by. Well, at least, they used to be, but that's being phased out in favour of something else (I think it may be ??Snomed?). Named after a Dr Read, apparently. I think. Similar to ICD-10, with letters and subsections.
