Paint

I visited my mum and dad they have just finished having their house decorated (I only went there so that I could give my mum a Mother's Day gift) unfortunately the fumes of the paint has triggered my asthma this is not helped by hayfever causing some problems.

My chest is very tight and I am breathless my peakflow was 200 in the morning and this dropped to 100. On Monday I am starting a new job and the apprehension to that it also not helping me at the moment.

Does anyone else find that there asthma is triggered by paint fumes?

Im not too bad with paint.

However, creosote & petrol fumes always set me coughing

Not mixed together i mean.

Also, my wifes fave perfume, youth dew by estee lauder always set me off.

That didnt make her happy :(

Hi asthmagirl

I now look back through the years and wonder if I always had asthma. New paint fumes were just one of many things that would give a feeling that my chest was being compressed and gave me terrible nightmares. I coughed and coughed but never wheezing and being healthy otherwise, it was just put down to making a fuss about nothing.

weirdly, i can paint outdoors i.e. walls etc...

but if indoors diy done by someone else or mine needs doing i cant be in same place.

before i go into the place, the windows and doors need to have been open to air the place for good few hours first or thats it, wheezers back ;)

me + u both then! we both need keep away from walking perfumeries, hey?!

;)

Yes! Had an hour long coughing fit once when my husband spray painted a model in the porch with the door and window open.

Hi Asthmagirl,

Paint sets me off also ,so we use a odourless one from BnQ.

Paint, perfume, fabric conditioner, air fresheners, cleaning products, hairspray, cigarette smoke ............. the list just goes on and on.

One of the things that set me off in October was having a new bathroom put in - lesson learned, though. Next time I have ANYTHING done in the house I'm going to move out!

Like Grannymo, I had years where it was all put down to imagination or making a lot of fuss about nothing and I kept quiet but I'm getting much better about asking people to tone down their perfume and maybe if they have to smoke, making sure that they don't come back and sit next to me - mixed reception though.

hey,

I'm only ever effected by spray paint, which hasn't been helped as my hobby is car and bikes body repairs, so over the winter it's been done in the garage!

Take Care :)
