Turbohaler

Back in April 2007 my doctor replaced my usually Puffer with a turbohaler, during the rest of the year my asthma got worse, it was put down to stress at first but when I was put back on the puffer in Feb I felt better straight away. However I now have Oral Thrush since feb and doesnt seem to be dissapear. I have tried Penacilin and other tablets that you can only take for 2 weeks. Any advice!!!

Hi Andy,

not sure why you have been given penicillin for thrush. Thrush is a fungal infection, so you want an anti-fungal rather than an antibiotic, something like nystatin or amphotericin. Maybe this was the other tablet you had? Although you don't usually take antifungals for oral thrush as tablets you swallow, but as liquid you swill around the mouth or lozenges you suck. It needs to actually get to where the thrush is.

Are you doing the standard things like using your puffer with a spacer and rinsing your mouth out well after?

Yep got the spacer and I have got nystatin drops as well. Doctor took a swab today so will wait for tests. Had a go at my boss today as he wants me to take phone calls even though my doctor wanted me to go on the sick.

nystatin rubish epecially if had a while, suggest ask gp for fluconazole andtry rinsing mouth with something like cordosyl mouthwash twice a day.

Just an update, still got the thrush!!!! Been taking some anti fungui tablets but still there. Doc has now change my inhaler to just serevent but Asthma is worse, any advice?

HiI was advised by a pharmacist to use mouth wash (I was oraldene) after taking my inhaler (Symbicort - but its a turbohaler) and that has been extremely effective at holding thrush at bay. If I can't use mouthwash I rinse my mouth out with water immediately.Hope this helps.Judi
