side effect of salbutamol overuse ??

just wondered, i seem to be losing my voice, on top of everything else!!

could this be down to using so much salbutamol nebs/ inh ?

never had this side effect before despite having needed countless nebs/ inh both in costa and inh at home!!!

any thoughts?

Hmm, my asthma is less severe than yours from the sound of it, but my voice has been a bit funny over the last few months - it often sounds/feels like I have a cold, and I'll suddenly start croaking (haven't lost it entirely though). I also had a sore throat for ages after the cold which kicked things off, which I assumed was just another cold.

Hoarse voice is listed as a side effect of some of the medication I've been taking (Clenil and tiotropium) but I've had this voice issue even when not on them. I don't think I take enough salbutamol for that to make a difference - it doesn't really work for me, and my voice is not doing well today even though I haven't had any Ventolin for a couple of days (sadly not because I haven't needed it!)

i havent got a sore throat with it, just sounding raspy, croaky. its gotten worse today. when speaking to mum on phone earlier, she could barely hear me, had to text instead! she thought was breathless from as due another neb/ inh again, so i had to explain to her then... altho yes i was getting breathless at same time.

when i get breathless, voice sounds worse :S

not on clenil or the other one you mentioned - unless thats ipratropium / atrovent as i have been taking that, but not that often, more than usual, but then times when i have taken it before, not had same effect on my voice ??

lets hope it comes back soon or i have to write post-it notes for my flat-mate!! lol

Yeah that's what I sound like - I find it's like the end of a cold when voice is on its way back but not quite there - except it never quite gets there.

Tiotropium (Spiriva) is not the same as ipratropium but it is related so may well have the same side effects. I'm not sure if that's it though as I had the same feeling before I was on it and well after I'd stopped the Clenil (didn't work).

Hope it comes back, you don't need that as well as everything else! xx

Saw this on the site and just 'cut and paste' it for your info.

Side effects of preventer medicines

The possibility of side effects from taking your inhaled preventer medicine is very low. Because the inhaled medicine goes straight down to the airways where it is needed, very little is absorbed into the rest of the body.

If you use preventer medicine there is a small risk of having a sore tongue, sore throat, hoarseness of the voice and a mouth infection called thrush. To help prevent these side effects, rinse your mouth out and brush your teeth after using your preventer inhaler. Using a spacer will also help reduce the possibility of thrush.

I seem to suffer with my voice when the doctors add in ipatropium nebs to my management and it takes a few days after the nebs have stopped for my voice to return or become less hoarse. I also find that during these times I feel like I need to cough up phlegm from the back of my throat (sorry) but nothing comes even though its definatelt there.

thankyou for your replies.

yes jonro, i seem to think its prob down to the ciclesonide then, i am on a very high dose of it, and even though i rinse my mouth and brush teeth etc after, i dont always use aerochamber after ;S (they dont fit into volumatic due to shape!)

so thats prob why! so better make sure i always do use i then, hopefully my voice be back soon.

when on phone to mum, mum thought i was breathless and due a neb, i was, but had lost my voice i had to explain lol.

not only do we have the symptoms of asthma to deal with, we also have the side effects of the meds to deal with too, and the side effects of those!! grrr!!
