never really had asthma until 3 years ago. Started with a virus then went to a cough, saw gp and gave me peak flow antibiotics, no change so i went back and he said i had asthma from the peak flow readings.
To cut a long story short, one of these viruses hospitalised me for a week. I saw a chest consultant and he said he was unsure whether i had asthma even though my gp diagnosed it at least a year previousley. Now i know i have asthma as had really bad attack as from my previous postings oct 2011. No one as ever asked me to see another consultant
How should i approach this. i don't trust the asthma nurse at the surgery but my gp is top notch i am delighted to say. Should i be approaching them for a referral even though at the moment fingers crossed my asthma is under control.
I've not had quite your scenario but I definitely have had varying medical opinions and been discharged by a consultant (2 in fact) saying it's not asthma. (Due to see another soon and rather nervous about it based on previous experience, though I have a stronger hand to play this time). So might be able to help.
It does sound like with that history seeing a consultant wasn't unreasonable; however, if your asthma's controlled at the moment the GP might feel it's not immediately necessary. Perhaps as you say s/he is really good, you could make an appointment and ask, or bring it up next time you're in?
Or you could perhaps try ringing the adviceline on here - I've generally found their advice very good on this sort of thing.
