Actimel

Hello,

Watching This Morning, this morning funnily enough, don't ya love daytime TV? Anyway I love watching the Dr Chris stuff and today he suggested for people on antibiotics to have actimel twice a day as it cuts the risk of you catching the hospital super bug C DIFF. I have been on Azithromycin for over 2 years and I'm on my 5th course of IV antibiotics this year. I have already had C DIFF before so just wondered what those of you on long term antibiotics thought and if you have tried it or use it?

Taken from the this morning website:

Probiotic 'can cut risk of hospital bug diarrhoea'

A probiotic drink can cut the chance of contracting diarrhoea associated with the hospital bug Clostridium difficile (C diff), researchers said last month. Experts found that drinking Actimel reduced the chance of people over 50 getting diarrhoea linked to the potentially lethal bug. (The Times, 29th June 2007)

Dr Chris: ""C Diff kills two and a half times as many patients in the UK as MRSA. It particularly effects the over 60's and can cause diarrhoea which can kill. Actimel has one particular bacteria in it that other probiotic drinks don't have and this friendly bacteria has proven to have a remarkable effect when fighting CDiff.""

Tks xx

Not specifically Actimel or C.diff, but I've heard tell from patients & one of my previous GP trainers that taking something like Actimel or Yakult helps prevent run-of-the-mill antibiotic-associated diarrhoea.

I always have yoghurt with live bactira in, especially after antibiotics. Always found it helped me feel back on my feet again, especially when the antibiotics made me feel really yuk.

I saw that too- I am off work with asthma and a cold, and now I seem to be getting earache as well!

I am sure that if the Actimel doesn't do you any good, it won't do you any harm. If anyone else is interested I think that Dr Chris said that the study was specifically on Actimel. I wonder if it helps with the side effects of oral steroids as well!

Personally I get a bit fed up of daytime TV so have been attempting to knit. I have made a scarf for the mother-in-law as she said suggested it was a good activity for when my asthma was bad. I am now attempting some gloves which look nothing like the picture.

TKS,

They say that for dogs too, I put Sandie on it but her collitis didn't like it and it gave her the runs! Its supposed put back the good bacteria. I think Muller vitality have probiotics in too, they have those as yoghurts as well as drinks.
