Random Question.....

I have just received my first appointment for asthma clinic, I had just been seeing a consultant before. On the letter it says that I need to take a urine sample with me?!

I am a little confused by this as I dont really see what that can tell me about my lungs !

Does anyone have any ideas as to why i have been asked to take a sample? Has this happened to anyone else?

Most hospital clinic letters here have that on even for repeat appointments, afraid as i never have clean container i go when get there if they ask me for it!

They do dip test it but can't remember why sorry!!

Hi wherrers,

As Marmite says, this is fairly routine for all out-patients appointments. My local OPD check your urine on the first appointment, and subsequently if there are any problems.

They'll be dipping it for blood, protein, sugar and ketones, and possibly a couple of other things too, which can give them an idea of whether you are diabetic or might have a urinary tract infection - not directly relevent to the lungs, perhaps, but common problems, particularly diabetes in people on steroids.

Don't worry if you don't have a suitable container - it's usually fine to give them a sample once you get there.

Hope this helps
