Still feel new to all of this .........

Hi all

I am 36 and was diagnosed with 'severe' Asthma in June where I also caught a chest infection. After a couple of months, my chest settled down but has been playing up for the past 2 months.

I am using the steroid inhaler (6 puffs a day), together with a long acting inhaler. I saw my Asthma nurse on Friday who has prescribed me Montelukast tablets. She has said if these do not help to get the Asthma under control, I will be referred to a specialist.

At the moment, I am having to use my reliever at least 6 times a day and I have had a cough since this all started which because of the coughing, makes me feel achy and just generally tired.

My question is - IF I have to see a specialist, what treatment can they offer that is different to what I have tried and am currently taking?

there are various things that can be offered. im not sure what preventer or reliever you are taking, but they could be changed. some people dont respond well to certain relievers, or the form in wich they are taken (i know that for me seretide diskus just doesnt seem to get to the lungs, so i use the spray with a spacer) and there are very many different preventers to be tried. in sever cases nebuliders are used, for preventer, and or reliever. there are also different tablets that can be used, such as bricanyl, oxeol. in very severy cases, and after certain tests, injection or iv infusions can be used on a regular basis (xolair, terbutalline)
