what can i take for a chesty cold?

i've very recently found out that i have asthma and have been given ventolin inhalour. only thing is now that i have a pretty bad chest cold (know its the cold that making me cough more than my asthma at moment) but as i deleved in to my cupboard of medication found my usual benylin chesty cough medication and found out that it's not advizeable to take it with asthma.?.?. i phoned thrugh to nhs direct who wasnt really much help and said that i should go and see a phamacy (with no transport or any open in town not possible!) so is there anything i can take or do i just have to live it out ??
