any dog owners out there....

hi, want to pick your brains (if you know what I mean!!). Have just got dogs (2 labs) out of kennels, one (Archie) unfortunately sliced his paw (pad) whilst in there - kennel staff dont know how but they are paying all vet bills.

Anyway, mainly has anyone got any suggestions on how to keep a dressing on a dog's paw/leg!!! have changed it 3 times since Mon, vet said now keep it off but keep it dry and covered while in garden (such a sense of humour vets!) - have tried plastic bag with sock over which is tied round body of dog but wonder if anyone has any other ideas?

Would a plastic bag and either tape around it or a rubber band work just whilst in the garden? I did this before to cover a wound on my wrist whilst in the shower. As long is it isn't for long circulation should be ok.

plastic bag and tape! If dog pulling it off you need one of those lampshade things that make them look really really sad and stupid but do work!

The lampshades work quite well my dog got one at the minute cos she got a broken back leg with an external fixator on!!!! If it front leg tho dog may still be able to at woth buster collar (lampshade), They not that expensive you can get from vets!! Hope your dog gets better!!!!

You can get a chew deterrent spray from pet shops that tastes so horrible the dog learns not to lick it pretty quickly!

hi thanks everyone for your replies/help. have got a ""lampshade"" (great description) but other dog is absolutely terrified of it and wont come in same room as Archie if he has it on, so am trying to do without (except when I am not with him). Have tried plastic bags and tapes but they only last a little while, at moment have cut up some tights and cut down into leg to make ""ribbon ties"" - that works but he is now learning he can pull toe end and stretch it and caught both dogs nibbling at it today! have two more weeks to go at keeping it dry - will try the spray tho, havent tried that yet.

hi, poor pup, not an easy job keeping that dry an clean! try a rubber glove or even better ask your vet for an old drip bag, they are stronger than bags or film, tie that on when hes out, u shouldnt leave it on all the time tho coz the foot will sweat and lengthen the healing process, also bathe in salt water (1teaspoon salt to 1pint water) but make sure u dry it after, will help it to heal quicker.

You could ask your vet if we some sort of vetwrap bandage that is anit chew/lick Ik now my vet has some cos i need to now get some as my naughty dog as learnt to hook her buster collar (lampshade) over her fixatoe and pull the bandage of the bolts of the fixator!!! anti lick bandage tastes grossss i tried it vet made me LOL!!!!

when i was younger we had a dog called Judy, she sliced her paw open when she was younger, what my mum did was put an old sock of mine on there (this was before i discovered knee length stripey numbers, very cool) and secured it with a scrunchie.

we also did that when she had an op when she was older

thanks Wendy. i ended up putting tights on but that's another story!....

sad news.... my dog Archie (the one with cut paw) and another problem and unfortunately the cut paw exacerbated this and last Tuesday I had to take him for vet to put him to sleep, so so sad, now other doggy crying for him at night.

dont worry about it, its hard when you lose a pet, they really do become part of the family.

when we lost our 2 from when i was little, i had their faces tattooed on my arm, and everytime we look at it, its a reminder of how much we loved them

Just wanted to send you loads of hugs Jackie - we lost one of our dogs last September and I remember how awful it was. Have you tried a ticking alarm clock to help the other dog at night - we used one on our remaining dog and he seemed to enjoy the comfort of that, we also wrapped a hot water bottle in a thick towel so that he would have the warmth he used to get from curling up next to his brother. We did this for about 4 wks and then gradually cut back - first taking away the hot water bottle and just leaving the towel and then putting the clock in alternate nights for about a wk. He seems to have adjusted pretty well now.

Thanks guys/girls, and thanks Rusty for clock and water bottle ideas. i've been putting extra bedding in for her but despite washing it since Archie went I guess she can still smell him around and not sure if this is upsetting for her or comforting - i wish she could talk!!!! am trying not to let her cute lab eyes persuade me into extra cuddles and biscuits but it is soooo hard to resist. mind, tis certainly easier walking one dog that pulls than two!
