Hi Guys

After a but off advice.

Firstly i hope you are all well? and the kids or not struggling to much.

We not really had much of a brake, Martha is now on her 4th cold in 6 weeks and we are struggling, she only had 5 hrs sleep last night.

In the last few weeks she had not been off salbt for less than 2 days and last night it took 25 puffs in a short space (3/4hrs) to stop her wezzing. The asthma nurse told me to go stright in with 10 puffs 4hrly when she was poorly as she felt she needed hit hard. But it doesnt leave me far to go after it doesnt work.

well after seeing a lovely GP today, she had been give a 5 day course off pred she did hum and ah... but at least she didnt try to fob me off like the doctor that i seen the last time she was struggling as he told me her cough had nothing to do with her asthma.. (yea right).

So my question, do you send your kids to school/childcare etc if they are on pred ? i dont think sh will go tomorrow and lucky my DH has the day off work anyway.. ...

I think i am gonna email her consultants sec to get an app in the new year. As we just where not getting on top off her coughing.. inbetween colds.

Oh she woken form her nap so time to try and get her first dose off pred down her...

Hi Natasha, I wrote a reply earlier on but lost connection as I pressed 'submit' (often happens - very annoying!). I suggested keeping Martha off school whilst she's on pred. It's only a 5 day course and if you or someone else are able to look after her at home, it is better. I cant remember how old she is but she is very young isnt she? Her immune system is obviously weakened through all the colds she's had and it's best to keep her away from further germs.

My son (14) is always quite poorly by the time he goes onto steroids, so he's always stayed at home for the duration of the course. Sometimes he's gone to school if he's nearing the end of a tapered course. But we found the heavy duty antibiotics plus pred makes him feel pretty ropey anyway.

Hope Martha improves quickly, it's a bad time of year and seems worse this year.

Hi Thanks

I hate it when that happens.

Yea she is only 21 months.

I wasnt sending her anyway was just wondering what others thought. My thoughs where the exct the same as yours. It was my mum who questioned me when i said she couldnt go. She only goes one day a week to a childminder. Lucky my dh had got a days AL anyway so he will have her, but hes not that great coping with her when shes poorly.

Yes its been very hard and we seen a silly reg in clinic who said see you in 6 months.... very helpful over the winter, gonna find out the consultants sec number and give her a call.

She seems to be really struggling, Last year after her PICU addmission she was put on proflactic anti bots and seemed to get at less colds and i know that shouldnt make a differance as they are viral infections shes getting. But she was on aztromycin which is ment to help with the airway as well.

I hope this works.

I am in the middle of doing a PICU appeal which is going well , we are dontating food and gifts for the parents, siblings and children on PICU this christmas.

Thanks again. Hope your sons not struggling to bad at the moment. I was dreading this winter. (our first). the pred seems to have lessoned the coughing a bit more.

thanks

Hi

Hope things are settling down for you & Martha. My daughter is off school initially when she is on steriods, but unfortunately 5 days doesn't work for her anymore and the last couple of courses have been 10 days or more. The first time it was the end of term and she was off the whole course of 19 days,(but probably could have gone back after 10 days). Recently she had a 10 day course and ended up at home for the first 6 days as she wasn't well, but I sent her back on day 7 having built her up with short walks. Sometimes I find that even though she still doesn't feel great by about day 7, she can go to school, with very specific instructions, being with her friends helps her feel better. My guidance is if she is getting stroppy and fed up then she is probably better, as well as the more traditional approach of peak flows & sleeping through the night without coughing and waking and able to climb up the stairs without becoming breathless!

hi

Thanks. We ended up in hosptial yesterday as we had an awful night.

Sadly my daughters to young to do peck flows... wish she could.

She stops them on sat but waiting for my GP to call me as i think she poss gonna need longer and i need an app on monday for a review and the reception wont book me one.

Thanks..

Sorry to hear this Natasha. Sounds like she might need steroids a bit longer. Hope things improve soon.
