I think spinal blocks are great. You have a choice of being knocked out totally, a mild sedative so you can listen to music or no sedative at all so you are totally awake except you cannot feel anything luckily! I stayed totally awake as I wanted to know what was happening! Most people prefer some sort of sedative. The anaesthetist tried to get me to have a sedative as I think he thought I might be trouble!

I think I’ll ask to be knocked right out, the sound may panic me, Thanks for reply hope you wasn’t long recovering

I was fully sedated by Iv drugs once the spinal anaesthetic had taken effect . Didn’t see any thing or hear anything, just as I wanted .

thank you too for putting my mind at rest, will ask everything tomorrow at this pre assessment,

I had a complete spinal block when I had my C-Section. Yes you can definitely hear everything but most definitely can’t feel anything! Please ask about all your options at your assessment today! The recovery times from all your options on offer. You’re lucky in getting your surgery. Hopefully it’ll make a big difference to the quality of your life! Remember try not to be scarred to ask questions! Right things down before you go that you want to ask. As sometimes you forget or don’t get the opportunity. Wishing you the very best of luck! Please let us know how you get on! Sending big hugs and love 🙏🏻🍀❤️😘xx

Hello Please don't worry I have had 3 spinal blocks now with both of my hips and my knee and it was absolutely fine as they put me to sleep and I didn't know a thing about it

I had been worried exactly the same as you before my pre op as I imagined I would be awake

I remember each time I went down to theatre I was able to have a laugh with the staff they were so lovely and nothing was scary at all then I just drifted off to sleep and next thing I knew I was waking up in recovery

Good luck with your hip replacement I recovered quickly both times and it was wonderful to be pain fee and get a new lease of life x

Ok the spinal anaesthetic is superb as said you get a choice.

In my case saw the anaesthetist morning of the op and we discussed everything then (have a list of info you want to ask) I opted for sedation felt be a good sleep before the discomfort of the op later. Slept through fine all was good. First thing I noticed was the usual hip pain associated with the condition was gone. Obviously there's the wound soreness but they have a great system to keep pain in it's place i.e. not pain just discomfort. Make sure you do your post op exercises before the op start now it makes a big difference to the brain knowing what you're trying to do and muscle memory too.

Had both mine replaced, second 8 months after the other, best thing ever pain wise. I'll never be as fit as before but mobility much improved.

All the best 🤗

Wow, what a relief for you to be where you are now, well done, pain free days, yes this assessment didn’t go into the spinal block, that will happen morning of op, am going start exercising before now and definitely after, thanks for your info, onwards and upwards Liz

I had a spinal with sedation for my hip replacement and then again for my knee replacement. No problem either time. Woke up after it, none of the groggy/sick feeling that you get with a general. Good luck!

Both my hips were done with a spinal block with sedation. Never knew a thing. Best part was no general anaesthetic to recover from.

I was totally awake and have a complicated spine after major spinal surgery three decades ago so they had to try more than once. It was all absolutely fine. Just mildly uncomfortable.

Choc-1234 in reply to KnockingKnee

All of people do say the same, very brave of you, want myself to be like that but I just imagine it would send me over the edge, being knocked out is best for me.

Jeppy profile image
Jeppy in reply to Choc-1234

im sure you would cope ok in that situation ( I have done but used calm techniques to get through). But no need to be a martyr 😊

thanks will give it some thought over the next 3 weeks .

Jeppy profile image
Jeppy in reply to Choc-1234

if unsure I'd def have sedation why put yourself in that position

I'm the worst with feeling I'd be out of control but you're in their safe hands and they will look after you - I can't see benefit of being awake really but we each different

Choc-1234 profile image
Choc-1234 in reply to Jeppy

yes your very right, I will get through it either way.

Jeppy profile image
Jeppy in reply to Choc-1234

you will. It helped me getting pro active I live alone so bought ready meals lots of shopping in, I even put a spare kettle upstairs teabags etc and bought milk sachets 😁. Toilet seat riser, grabber sticks important etc. Anything to make life easier. Low tho gas brought up to higher level etc

But wish I'd worked on upper body strength. Pulling self up higher in bed with good leg and arms was tricky at first Did I send link for good website b4 and after?
