Can anyone say how long they have waited in Covid times for an Nhs hip replacement? Or has anyone been given an estimated waiting time? Thanks

Hip replacement
I was informed that it was 70 weeks to see MSK team and up to 2 years for hip replacement op. Consequently decision made to self fund. Not something I had budgeted for exactly, especially as knee will need doing in following months!!Operation is this Friday .( It was going to he 3 weeks ago but anaesthetist wanted report from cardiology so postponed until now.)
Thanks for your reply Jalia, hope all goes well for your surgery on Friday.
I'm also under the impression that it is about 2 years and know one friend who has been waiting 18 months already with no end in sight. Another friend did have both of his done at a private hospital but through the NHS last year. They are trying to get through them but I believe the list is still increasing.
I'm not suggesting you try this but my 82 year old aunt broke hers in a fall in October and had hers replaced later that day!
Well sootysooty, your question is a difficult one , I have been receiving treatment during the virus but did have my op cancelled due to lock down. at short notice. It was eventually done in October 2020 however it as not been as successful due to being at home for virus restrictions. Sorry mine was my knee but the waiting times are similar, the waiting times before the virus were already over six months now its over a year just to see MSK. Operations on average were a six month wait now it can be one to two years. However privately you can still get treated at your own leisure at a price. I investigated while waiting for my treatment. Consultations cost £200 on average for 45 mins. and ops cost £11,0000 and up probably dearer now . Best wishes for a short wait , you could go on the cancellation list for short notice op due to some one not being able to come in, but for these ops thats not the best option.
My neighbour had hers done after 4 months of seeing the consultant but not sure how long the wait was to see him....we are in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire (Hertsmere borough)
It must depend on the health board. I'm in Scotland, I was put on the list in September 2019, given a date of March 2020, four days before the surgery we went into lockdown. I then had the surgery in September 2020. Looking at other people's experiences, my wait time was good! Although I'm now waiting on a knee and no date yet, good luck!
Last fall I was told this January but never heard from anyone. I am now getting a steroid shot in a couple of days and hope for the best after enduring pain for the last two or more years. I am in Oregon.
Hi Peg, I have had two shots. The first lasted 3 years and the second 8 weeks. No more shots for me, waiting for a replacement. Good luck with your shot. I think the 1st ones are more effective. I had 2 in my other hip before it was replaced. It’s been great for 11 years. I am in England.
Actually this will be at least my fourth shot. I have avoided hip replacement for quite a while, a few years. My last shot was a year ago. Hopefully the shot will last until the op., whenever that occurs. My hip was bad when I had knee replacement in 2017 so you get the idea. The pain comes and goes. An exercise in a hot bath is to clinch your hips while holding your breath for about 10 seconds or more which strengthens the glutes that hold your hips in place. Done several times each morning during my hot bath has done wonders through the years.
I forgot to add that I also use a cane. I could not function without one.
I saw my consultant last week and he said a minimum of two years as it will be a total hip replacement and not the shorter hip resurfacing and partial replacement.
I have other health conditions including osteoporosis so that has to improve to ensure a successful outcome.
Unfortunately I cannot take a cancellation until my general health improves and going the private route through the NHS is not an option as they like to take on "easier" and less complicated cases where they can get patients in and out of the private hospitals more quickly.
My friend had a partial knee replacement through the NHS private hospital system and was only waiting on the list for three months. However, she was only in for one night and felt that she came out too soon as was still suffering from anaesthetic symptoms and inadequate pain relief. One positive note though was that she was back in her own bed sooner than if she was treated on the NHS!
I received my Operation date today for a total Hip Replacement. I saw the Consultant December 21 and the Op is Aug 22. I live in North Yorkshire.Quite surprised really as when I asked at initial consultation they didn’t know.
I am feeling anxious but I’m sure it will be fine.
Regards
Margaret.
That’s great news Margaret! It’s the best thing you can do. Not long to wait now.
Over a year. I put myself on cancellation list at hospital and both hips were short notice. One was 4 days and the other. 7 days.
I saw the consultant in February and was put on the list. It took me over a year to get this far! Said I was happy to have the op at short notice. I’ve been called for a pre op appt next week so not sure if this means the op will be sooner rather than later!
