New treatment for knee osteoarthritis?

Hi, i wondered if anyone can help me source the origin of a bbc programme earlier in 2020 which showed a woman in her 30's who was suffering badly from arthritis in her knee(s?). She mentioned that she had been very active, an amateur sportswoman , who , i think, also ran her own exercise class business. However, the arthritis in her knee(s?) meant she had to give up because of the pain. Indeed, the pain was so bad that she had trouble walking even in the house.

But then she discovered (?) a state of the art treatment which i think involved grafting stem cells and cartilage from elsewhere in her body and this was injected into the knee (s?) .

She said that the treatment had been a 100% success and that she was able to go back to her exercise business and could now run and jump again! I'm not fully positive but think the company who offer the treatment may have been from Southampton and , also im not positive, but i think the bbc programme was Morning live on bbc 1 just after bbc breakfast with Kym Marsh and a welsh presenter. I think it was one of the early episodes!

Wow that sounds good! I don’t know of the program myself but it reminds me of some research published about ten years ago.A manufacturer of glucosamine sponsored a small, but apparently well-run, trial of their product against a placebo. It was found that the gluc. was effective against knee pain. You have to take this with a pinch of salt, clearly, in view of the sponsor.

Anyway, I don’t have knee pain but arthritis in toes, and the pain would be completely unbearable without my daily glucosamine with chondroitin.

Hi, I didn't see the program but heard about it on here. I think there were two hospitals, not sure but think they were Bristol and Southampton, who were doing trials at that time. Would be very interested in getting my knees done that way, if done locally, as it's far less invasive than TKR.

Mike.

I found a link for the shows but they don't tell you exactly what is in the programme so you'll have to trawl through the programmes to find it - bbc.in/3pDICBt

Hey, I don’t know what program this is. But I had stem cells pulled from my body and then injected into my hip for my arthritis and it didn’t help at all. I totally felt like I was conned - if it looks too good to be true...

Hello - yes I have an article that I cut out of my local newspaper here in Bristol that Southmead hospital had done a research programme into this treatment. You are right it is a surgery to regenerate cartilage using stem cells but it is only available to a very small number of people and not suitable if you have received prior surgery (which was my problem)

I saw this programme and made a note of it though I never did follow it up. According to the scribble I made on one of my old appt. letters it was on The One Show on BBC 27/11/19. I hope this helps, please let me know if you get anywhere with it. Good luck.
