I am due to have a ceramic hip replacement to my right hip next week, and if that is successful, I will have my left hip replaced in the coming months also.
Has anyone else had this done? Would be interested to hear how you feel about it and how your recovery was/is.
I am 38 and have been suffering with chronic hip pain for the past 9 years, and have had 4 failed hip arthroscopies to repair torn cartilage. This is my last chance for a pain free life.

Mine wasn’t ceramic, but normal metal (titanium) as used for older patients (72) - and have to say it was very successful.
Up and about next day - had it done previous evening - so less than 24hours, and out of hospital the following day.
No issues, you just have to be mindful of advice re bending etc. Very rarely think about now - nearly 2 years on unless I walk too far or over rough ground when it does ache a little - not enough to warrant pain killers, just a few minutes rest.
As you are half my age, I guess that’s why you're having the ceramic type, but recovery is same.
I had my first ceramic hip aged 48 and the second 2 years later. They are both doing fine.
It is very important to follow all the guidelines for recovery though, the physio exercises, rest, and as DorsetLady mentioned be mindful of advice re bending, It is really not a good idea to go over the 90 degree angle!
I have enjoyed over a decade of active life thanks to my new hips and am still mobile! I hope you have a successful, and long enjoyed freedom from the pain you are suffering now. Wishing you all the best for next week.
Thank you so much Dawn. It is great to hear that you have had such wonderful success with your hip replacements and especially in my case, using the same type of prosthesis.
I am extremely eager to be pain free.
Many thanks for your post and I sincerely wish you many more years with your hips x
Hi. I was wondering how you’re doing after the operation? I’ve been told by my doctor on Friday that I need both hips replacing. I’m 47 and I just want to get back to being active again
Hi Sam, I will be 8 weeks post op tomorrow. I’m definitely getting there but it’s been hard going I’m not going to lie. This is my 5th hip operation so I was never new to operations but this has been the hardest to get used to. I haven’t had a follow up appointment yet and I’ve only had two physio appointments because of COVID so it’s not been the best time to have it done. I am walking unaided, have been for a number of weeks but I still walk with a bit of a limp. I have pain when I do too much but overall I think it’s worked okay. By all accounts I will feel a lot better once they’re both done. Sorry to hear you’re in the same boat.
