My Mum has just had a hip replacement at 94. She was out of hospital on Day 4, walked out on crutches which she dispensed with by about week 8 and now is back home living independently and going out after 3 months with me. She is on no meds at all. This is her second one, having had her other hip done 13 years ago. She is a real success story and if it were me I'd have it done in a heartbeat (for me it's knees ). She waited for a year, was housebound and was on morphine patches. This is a transformation. I wish you all the best. X
Hi, I had my first hip replaced 10 years ago at 48, the other 8 years ago. Both doing great. Considering I have had at least 3 accidents involving ending up on my left (first replacement) hip and I have still bounced back. Have got a bursitis on that hip but I have gone from hobbling around with a stick and needing an automatic car at age 48 to driving a manual again and able to play with my grandchildren and walk my dog.. RA flared now so that is a different story!! So... The "guarantee" is still a life of 10 + years for a replacement but they can last well beyond that, my father has 25 year old replacements. He had one revision after 15 years for the first hip, but he had no joint left when it was first replaced so we knew anything could happen. He is 90 now and still (albeit hobbling) independent living alone. The key really is doing as your consultant/nursing team advise. Do the exercises, however insignificant they seem, take the painkillers, they are there so you can exercise through the pain and heal better. Most people are home within 4 days and pretty much "normal" after six weeks. Although it takes the body a good year to two to heal inside out. We are all different though, so its best not to compare if recovery is slower. I cant stress how important it is to follow the guidelines and advice your team give you. That really is the key. I wish you all the best and hope you get the op soon. My feelings are better quality of life while we are younger, we never know what the future will bring and if we leave it we may have new hips but the rest of the body may have crocked up by then!!
We wish you best of luck with this lizaw !
best wishes,

Hi
I had a total hip replacement 11 days ago operation smooth much better than I expected 2 hours in total as long as you manage the pain which seems to be worse at night and not sleeping very well small compared to pain I was getting before I had the op
I am walking 4 time a day about 250 meters a time doing the excises as told already feeling better than I have done for years none of the old pain just the new pain from the op looking forward to the future
