Hi Warkie,

Diazepam (Vallium) is a fairly "mature" but effective medication used for anxiety reduction amongst other things. It is a member of the "benzo-diazapine" drug group, all of which can lead to a level of "dependency" i.e. become slowly less effective with use requiring a higher dose to maintain the desired effect. Most GPs avoid prescribing them these days, and if so, then only for 3-4 weeks or so (maximum). I have been prescribed these in the past and they did work. When my anxiety subsided as my personal situation improved, I had to "wean off" them to avoid withdrawal effects, which can be horrible, especially if on them for an extended period. Hope this helps.

Best wishes, Mallet-head

I am on a dose of 2mg per day at the present,

I fully agree with all that Mallet-head has written but personally I would not be without them

Hi warkie,

I was on diazepam and another similar drug for 30 years. And they allowed me to initially get through college get a good job, have a good life etc. there not a cure, but can help, as said above the doctors dont like prescribing them now.

I was lucky, I only ever used them when necessary, and this in the end would maybe be once per week so never really got too addicted to them. Although, even now after three years of being drug free, I still like to have them in my pocket, lol.

There a bit like the ring in lord of the rings film.

I'd never take them now though, as the withdrawals got to a stage that they were actually worse than the panics.

for short term if you can get them prescribed I would say there ok.

All the best

Bxxx

I have never been on diazapam but my mother and sister were on it for many years. They both found after a few years that instead of decreasing their anxiety it made them more anxious. So they both came off it. My sister said she suffered no side effects but my mother had a lot.

I think there are a lot of newer and better drugs than diazapam.

diazapam is good for anxiety, personally I prefer xanax,as the diazapam leaves me very sleepy..these meds have their place, and can give relief quickly from anxiety,2mg of diazapam is a low dose,I take 0.5mg of xanax 3 times daily, and have been doing so for nearly 30 years I've never felt the need to increase them, and my DR is happy about that,to be honest they were a life saver for me ,and still are,as I can't take antidepressants, but then people can get dependant on a/ds aswell,we just have to respect these drugs for what they are,a quick fix,and not a cure...

Hi Warkie,

I use Diazapam for 'panic first aid' use- i.e in a case of extreme panic/ anxiety, as a last resort. I have it more for comfort than anything else! I would not reccomend it for long term use as it is wears off quickly and is very strong. I currently take 10mg of escitalopram daily and find that it works well. Unlike diazapam you dont feel tired or foggy, instead it just allows the scary thoughts to quieten down.

I know diazepam is highly addictive so, personally, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, I have enough problems managing my alcohol and nicotine addiction! If I'd had a little packet of them, just in case, like Rach and Baylien, I know I would've abused them totally and craved more. But that's just me, I have an addictive personality and if I was offered a drug to make me feel better I wouldn't just take it when I felt a bit 'off-colour', I'd want it all the time.

Think of it as a plaster, to use on a temporary basis to take the edge of things

Are you on any other medications?

I have diazepam for 'first aid' use too, 2mg tablets. I only take these when absolutely necessary, am also on 50mg sertraline but I don't think this actually helps at all. I try not to take the diazepam as I know GP's don't like to prescribe it but for my anxiety it is fantastic!
