No, don't get then syringed. This practice is outdated.

See your GP who may give you some drops.

If needed, have them gently removed by suction.

May not be necessary .

Try calling a drug store like CVS or Walgreens if you are in the USA. You can get them online too. It's so easy.

Well see another GP at the practice. They should prescribe Olive Oil but you must be careful with it and patient.

Don't buy ear drops.

Phone ENT department at your hospital and enquire about how you get an appointment Microsuction for ear wax removal.

Under NO circumstances agree to having ears syringed.

Or :

If you can only see the same GP then go back and ask for a referal to ENT clinic.

Try Olive oil then. (That's what the doctor would prescribe probably anyway).

If you decide to buy the tiny bottle with dropper from a pharmacist, - warm to body temperature before use by keeping in a pocket for a while or tucking into armpit & holding there for 5 to 10 mininutes. Only warm on body - don't heat it .

Lie on side and get your partner to drop few drops into ear. Stay there for 5 minutes. Then other side.

You need to do this twice every day for a week or more till wax runs out.

Example :

Care Olive Oil Ear Drops 10ml bottle. Between £2 & £3 on eBay or from a pharmacy.

(Don't put anything else in ears.

Hospitals don't syringe anymore - or shouldn't - because it can cause damage).

Sweet oil is at the pharmacy. It all slides out in 5 minutes.

I syringed ears all the time. But sweet oil in your ear for a few minutes then lie on that side to let it drain is easier and you can do it at home. I was a Neuro tech my last incarnation and half the old dudes had me cleaning out ears! I didn’t mind. If you choose that witch hazel is best because it’s hydrogen peroxide that dries all the way. Just make sure you lie down long enough. I do my husbands old man ugly ears twice a month. He says the sweet oil is gross. His ears are gross! Lol!

Doaty.

The poster is in the UK, Doaty.

I understand that pure olive oil is also known as sweet oil in the US?

Here in the UK hospitals stopped using the syringe method for removal of earwax because some people suffered damage to eardrum / Tinnitus.

Microsuction is the method used here now. There are also private clinics that do Microsuction.

This topic was also covered a while back on the British Tinnitus forum on HU.

It’s great I get the updates on other countries before my partners. There’s no way my Southerners will change. Not this generation. Maybe the next generation. Did you ever watch The Beverly Hillbillies?😂😂

Like you I am always searching for answers when it comes to vertigo because for me it is a really devastating feeling when an attack comes on. When I feel like I have wax in my ears I use hydrogen peroxide. I fill my ears up (one at a time), and let the them bubble for as long as it takes somewhere around 7 to 10 minutes on the average, and then of course you drain out the peroxide. When done I hold my nose and blow to pop my ears and open the eustachian tubes. Works really good!

Ye well had doctor out as I had a vertigo attack not much they can do either I go into a right panic it's awful. She said she couldn't see in my ears at all because they are impacted in wax and a won't go to get them syringed. A wonder if vertigo causes extreme anxiety. Do you tend to rock to your self alot? X

I think for me it does cause extreme anxiety. I have to lay down and moan. I have some mild vertigo right now as well as a feeling of fluid in my head. If I lean to far forward or try to bend over I'm really in trouble. I have to stand straight up.

The syringe method is taking a risk. Not supposed to be done anymore in UK as far as I know.

Try the olive oil at home.

Then, after a week or so, ask the doctor to look in your ears again to see if all clear.

Are you sure the doctor actually said "syringed" ? And not "removed " - could you have just thought she meant syringed?

Sodown in reply to Mary-intussuception

Have had tinnitus for yonks. My brother- in-law's audiologist in Boot's suffers badly from it and finds the solution is ear aids presumably with volume turned down to cut out extraneous noise?? I personally go for an over the counter remedy calledAudiclean together with a similar nasal. Seawater spray(Sterimar?)) twice daily and that works great for me xx
