Nosebleeds

I have just joined HealthUnlocked and this is my first post. I have been on ticagrelor, aspirin and the usual other drugs for 9 months after having had an N-Stemi heart attack. I have learned to manage small cuts and minimize all those bruises. But, I was not expecting the two massive nosebleeds I have had in the last three weeks. They were overwhelming and I had to go to emergency. The first time they did some cauterizing, and the second I had a balloon in my nose for 5 days. Now I'm running scared. We were just about to leave on a trip and now I feel like I had better stay close to medical help. I think the ticagrelor goes for one year, so I have 3 months to go, after which I will stay on aspirin for life. I am stuffing my nose with Vaseline in the hope of avoiding another horrible nosebleed... and we're cancelling our trip. I hope to be able to speak to the cardiologist in a few days, and I was wondering about asking if the dosage can be reduced (I take 90mg twice a day). I imagine they will say I'm stuck with it for the full year, but I will wait and see. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Hi,

When I first went on Bisoprolol I was prescribed it in the morning. Some months after starting it I developed full flow nosebleeds, at random. I consulted my GP and she said take it at night. I have never had a nose bleed since and that is some 12 years now.

Suggest you consult your healthcare professional to see which of (if any) of your medication could be causing this. Why are you on asprin ? If as an anticoagulant there are probably better meds around. You need to ask if changing the time of taking medication is an option.

Thanks so much for your reply; it is helpful to learn of your experience. Sudden heavy nosebleeds are very upsetting. Interesting that it happened after a while. I wonder if there is an accumulative effect with some meds; including mine, perhaps. I hope to speak to the cardiologist in two days so that I can ask more about my meds. The Heart Institute in Ottawa, which is where we were when I had my heart attack, has prescribed me ticagrelor (brillanta) night and morning for one year, and aspirin for life. They call it dual anti-platelet therapy. I am hoping that a change can be made for me.

I am on ELIQUIS for life, and I fight NOSEBLEEDS. Several have been very scarey. I am supposed to take 5mg twice a day. I skip one dosage, then back to two a day. Whenever I see my dentist, my cardiologist told me to skip a complete a day or two before any medical procedure. However, I have FACTOR V LEIDEN, a terrible GENE, that makes me 6 to 10 times more likely to have a BLOOD CLOT. Check with SEVERAL DOCTORS BEFORE SKIPPING, Each one of us has a different battle

oh dear, that’s disappointing. Perhaps ask to see an ENT surgeon to sort out the bleeding point. Good luck.
