Rivaroxaban and training

Hi guys, I was diagnosed with a PE a few days back and put on rivaroxaban, however I train and compete as a strongman and while I’ve cancelled a competition and stopped training for a few weeks to be on the safe side, will I be alright to start training again in maybe 4 to 6 weeks time? It’s a huge part of my life and I don’t think I’ll do well without it!

Cheers in advance guys.

My advice is to start small when you are ready with gentle exercise and build up to where you were before you were ill.

Yes, start small - you may well hind it takes months to get your energy back.

I used to do a lot of weight lifting before my pes now on rivaroxiban for life I'm advised only to do light exercise apparently heavy weights can cause the clots to move up I got a letter from my Dr saying what I can and carnt do

I think that it is all individual. And:-

A) it’s about why you got the clot in the first place

B) it’s about living on an anticoagulant - be wary of torn muscles etc

Hi I've emailed a trainer about this to see if he has any experience of people in same position. Will let you know if he can help

Are you sure that the clot has completely gone yet? Has it caused any damage? That’s the first thing to check surely. Then ask your consultants advice as they are the best people to know if and when you can start training as they will have your details and knowledge of your condition.

Weight lifting cause my upper extremity dvt. Paget schroetters. If it's that that caused it you wont be weight lifting ever again...see a specialist.

I was a gym bunny: dips, Captain's Chair, kettlebells, ropework, TRX, Spin classes, yoga, plus I had paroxysmal AF and three hernias from maxing-out the leg press machine. My stroke risk was 1% because of my age and, the EP told me that I didn't need an anticoagulant. Eighteen months later I had a stroke that left me partially sighted. My excellent Consultant Neurologist said no weights, kettlebells, or inverted yoga poses. I follow it to the letter.

Oh dear all these replies sound negative for u ... guess we're all saying only qualified practitioner can advise ... but worth asking normal doctor for a referral to an expert on physio? x

Hey guys, sorry it took me a while to get back to everyone! The doctors said I should be fine to build up again and if I’m honest I’ve done the odd naughty thing in the gym too and I’ve felt fine so far. I’ve spoken to a lady called Donna Moore who has been worlds strongest woman twice as she had a PE about 18 months ago and she competed at worlds strongest woman and won while still on rivaroxaban. Gives me a bit of hope.

Obviously your physician is the best person to ask. I was told with DVT to not do anything with impact or to bring blood pumping to my legs for 4-6 months. I'm not sure how it would be with PE. Are they still at risk to move? Since 6 months after my last DVT, I've trained fairly heavy, crossfit style workouts for 5 years. I am also on lifelong bloodthinners though and strong man would be more intense than my weightlifting. I have to also note that my tendons have gone to shit over the past 2 years, and I know that blood thinners weaken them, so please be wary of that when you pursue strongman.

I’d take doctors advice, I had PE three years ago and it took me well over a year and a half to be anywhere near full strength again. I don’t lift weights etc but my breathing wasn’t 100% for months , I kept getting chest infections all the time too. I’m on Rivoroxaban for life now , so dont rush back to the gym. Everyone is different and recovery time will differ. Look after your health it’s more important than the gym I’m afraid . Good luck.
